    Windmill by water and boat

The Netherlands is world-famous for its windmills, and today there are still more than 1,000 mills. Nowhere in the world will you find as many windmills as in the Dutch village of Kinderdijk. In 1740, no less than 19 sturdy mills were built here to drain excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders, which are situated below sea-level. The powerful mill sails transmit the force of the wind on to the large paddle-wheels, which scoop up the water.

According to legend, the name Kinderdijk owes its name to an incident during a flood in the 15th century. A cradle carrying a child floated on the waves of the river, with the cradle kept afloat by a cat. Eventually, the cradle became stranded on the slope of a dike. The spot where this event happened was named Kinderdijk.

In 1997, the mills of Kinderdijk were added to the World Heritage List of UNESCO and are one of the Netherlands' most popular tourist attractions. Join us for this truly wonderful Dutch Experience as we enjoy a full guided tour of the Pumphouse – with a full explanation of how the windmills work and how they have played a vital role in Holland’s past.

We then continue to the Visitor’s Windmill where you may wish to climb the stairs (approx 60) to reach the top of the windmill, which offers spectacular views. After this, we'll enjoy a relaxing cruise, seeing the windmills from a different perspective.

    DeltaPark Neeltje Jans

The DeltaPark Neeltje Jans houses a fascinating expo called the Delta Works. This exhibit tells the story of the Netherlands’ relationship with the sea, following the flood disaster of 1953. After this tragedy, the Delta Works flood defence system was implemented in the Netherlands, in order to strengthen the country’s boundaries with the sea.

At DeltaPark Neeltje Jans, we’ll be able to learn more about how this works, as well as visiting the storm surge barriers for ourselves to see them in action. This exhibit showcases the human experience of the 1953 flood disaster, and how this has been tackled with great efficiency, and so makes a fascinating excursion.

    Town Hall Gouda
Glorious Gouda and the Cheese Museum

Gouda is a typical Dutch city famous for its cheese, grand old buildings and pretty canals, and can boast one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The city was named after the Van der Goude family, which built a castle on the Gouwe River in the 11th century. The area was originally swampland and, over the next two hundred years, peat was collected and the land was developed.

Throughout our guided walking tour we see the impressive City Hall, built between 1448 and 1459, with its eye-catching red and white shutters. The original hall was severely damaged during the city’s great fire of 1438. Every hour, on the side of the building, there is a little puppet show, showing the city rights being handed over to Gouda, as happened in the year 1272.

We also see St. Janskerk church, at 123 metres it is the longest church in Holland and is world famous for its amazing stained-glass window dating back to the Middle Ages. We pass the City Museum with its collection of approximately 40,000 objects, ranging from a scale model of the city from the 16th century, to portraits and paintings from the 17th and 19th centuries.

No visit to Gouda is complete without a visit to the Gouda Waag (Gouda Weigh House). The Gouda Waag is a national monument and was built in 1668. Our tour and cheese tasting explains about the history of the building, as well as admiring Gouda crafts and learning more about the creation of the famous Gouda cheese. Following our tour, we get to sample some of this world-famous cheese.

    Het Loo Palace
    Het Loo Palace

Het Loo Palace is the most stunning palace in Holland. The former royal residence of Het Loo was built in the late 17th-century for the Stadtholder William III of Orange and his consort Mary II Stuart, the King and Queen of England.

The sumptuous interiors feature items of furniture, objects and paintings belonging to the generations of royal family members. The authentic fabrics used for the wall coverings and windows are quite exceptional. The stables at Het Loo Palace house many of the carriages, sleighs and vehicles belonging to the royal family and are still in use today when the Queen is in residence.

Meanwhile, the layout of the gardens have a characteristic strict symmetry. Many of the rare plant specimens were brought from all over the world. The gardens are designed to be viewed as a seasonally-changing flower and plant exhibition, thus the flowers are planted individually, rather than in groups.

To each side of the palace are William and Mary’s private gardens, aptly named the King’s garden and the Queen’s garden. The King’s Fountain at the rear of the Upper garden rises up to 13 metres, and it is the highest spouting fountain in Europe. The garden statues, which depict gods and goddesses from Greek myths, all have to do with the growth and flourishing of the garden - Venus, the goddess of love, takes centre stage.

    Taste of Antwerp

Antwerp is renowned as being the diamond capital of the world, and among all the European countries, Antwerpens are known to be the happiest people on earth! So join us on our guided walking tour as we explore the charming alleys and squares of this magnificent city.

We see the charming Grote Markt (Grand Place) in the historical old town; the square is surrounded by stunning medieval guild houses. There are many sights to take in here - the UNESCO Town Hall, the famous Brabo Fountain, the Cathedral of Our Lady, which is one of the most impressive and largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. It was built in 1351 it stands over 400 ft tall (entrance not included). We'll also see the Rubens statue, the monumental pedestrian tunnel under the Scheldt, and much, much more.

We then head to a traditional local cafe to sample some of Belgian's finest beers and international cheeses. We get to taste a dark, blonde and trappist/abbey beer (or similar); this gives you a good understanding of the different tastes and contrasts of the many beers available in Belgium, said to be around 800. To supplement the beer, we sample some popular international cheeses (these can vary).
