Belgium Highlights

One of the best features of Belgium is that, because of its small size, it is easy to explore a variety of sights and cities all in one visit. Delve into medieval times in charming locations such as the Old Town of Veurne, which has a remarkable heritage to explore, or discover The Gravensteen, meaning ‘Castle of the Counts’ – an incredible fortress in the heart of Ghent. Belgium is also well-known for its traditional Christmas markets, particularly the ones held in the capital and the romantic city of Bruges, where quaint cobbled lanes are lined with boutique shops. Don’t forget the coast – the ‘Queen of Belgium’s seaside resorts’, Ostend, offers a rare look into Flemish beach culture. Gastronomy is a highlight of this mighty country, making it one of the best places in the world to visit as a foodie. Sampling desserts such as the Belgian waffle and traditional Belgian chocolate are musts for every visitor, whilst Belgian beer culture was added to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list, meaning there’s certainly no shortage of traditional taverns to choose from!

Food and Drink

Belgian Waffles

Using a different recipe from your standard waffle, the Belgian version is generally very thick, and often served as a street food! There are two main types to choose from: the Brussels waffle which is light and fluffy or the Liege waffle, a denser treat using a brioche-style dough – both are enjoyed with toppings such as fruit or chocolate!

Chocolate

A holiday to Belgium wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its many chocolate shops. Producing tons and tons every year, the country is renowned for its traditional brands such as Godiva and Neuhaus, as well as the remarkable, rich quality of its chocolate.

Belgian Fries

An essential part of Belgium culture, the fries are unlike any other you’ve tried before – having been cut extra thick and then double-fried. Proper Belgian fries are made from scratch, and are soft on the inside and extra crispy on the outside.

Beer

Beer is a cultural staple of Belgium. The country has an incredible variety of beer styles and an unrivalled brewing heritage for tourists to explore. You certainly won’t go thirsty!

Planning your Trip

With so much on offer, you might need some inspiration! We’ve hand-picked a selection of favourite destinations and provided an overview of the very best highlights...

Bruges

Bruges Highlights

Belfry of Bruges

Dominating the Bruges skyline, the Belfry of Bruges stands proudly over Markt Square. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can head to the top of the tower for panoramic city views, admiring the treasury – which held the city’s charters, seals and coffers during the Middle Ages – on the way up.

The Markt

Nestled in the very heart of the city is the Markt – Bruges’ main square. Many of the city’s landmarks can be found here, including the Belfry, the Provinciaal Hof, and the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck.

Minnewater Lake

Surrounded by trees and the adjacent Minnewaterpark, this delightful lake is also known as the ‘Lake of Love’. With a picturesque bridge, traditional brick houses, and graceful swans who call the lake home, this destination is every bit as romantic and tranquil as it sounds.

Ghent

Ghent Highlights

Gravensteen

With a rich, fascinating history, the Gravensteen Castle – also known as the ‘Castle of Counts’ – is one of Ghent’s most significant sights. The castle is an outstanding example of the European medieval art of fortification, and visitors can explore the gatehouse, ramparts, keep, count’s residence, and stables.

St. Bavo’s Cathedral

Brimming with artistic treasures and historic gems, St. Bavo’s Cathedral is the most prominent church in Ghent. Hubert and Jan van Eyck’s world-famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ stands out here, with other highlights including masterpieces by Peter Paul Rubens and Frans Pourbus.

Graslei

A medieval port with a unique row of historic buildings, the beautiful façades of which reflect in the River Lys, Graslei is the perfect place to watch the world go by. Wit

Ostend

Ostend Highlights

Promenade

Ostend’s promenade is one of the liveliest areas of the city, with its charming cafés, seafood restaurants and independent shops. Combined with a beautiful beach and spectacular sea views, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a summertime stroll.

Zeilschip Mercator

Designed by Adrien de Gerlache, this majestic, three-master sailboat is permanently moored in front of Ostend’s city hall. Nowadays, the ship is a floating museum and visitors can explore the dormitories, the sea cadets’ mess, and the infirmary.

Atlantikwall Raversyde

Featuring over 60 bunkers, observation posts and artillery positions of the German ‘Atlantikwall’, this open-air museum showcases one of the best-preserved parts of this defence line. A must see for history enthusiasts, this unique bunker complex is home to the only preserved German coastal battery from the First World War.
