Go on holiday, not a research expedition
We've rounded up some of the very best sights to make planning your next adventure a breeze...
Austrian Tyrol
Innsbruck
Nestled in the heart of the Austrian Tyrol, Innsbruck is where mountains meet magic! This capital city dazzles with its Old Town, a whimsical maze of architectural styles and quirky shops. Keep an eye out for the Golden Roof, a little balcony decked out with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles.
Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel is a delightful destination for everyone! Picture a colourful medieval centre that bursts with shops and cafés, set against a backdrop of jaw-dropping Alpine scenery. Plus, there are two beautiful churches – perfect for a little downtime after a day of adventure!
Lake Achensee
The beauty of Lake Achensee – where the waters are bluer than a summer sky and crispier than a fresh mountain breeze. As the largest lake in Tyrol, it’s surrounded by five delightful towns, all basking in the breathtaking shadow of the stunning Karwendel and Rofan mountains.
Hallstatt
Hallstatt Salt Mine
With a history that’s more ancient than many countries, Hallstatt proudly boasts the oldest salt mine in the world, stretching back 7,000 years. Explorers have unearthed a salt man discovered in 1734, who’s a real-life testament to the wonders of salt preservation. Just imagine the tales he could tell!
Hallstatt Skywalk
Why settle for ground-level views when you can soar to new heights at the Hallstatt Skywalk? Floating 360 meters above the ground, this breathtaking platform invites visitors to peer down at the sparkling Lake Hallstatt and the soaring mountains – just don’t drop your phone!
Old Town
Wandering through Hallstatt's Old Town is like stepping into a fairy tale, complete with charming wooden chalets and stunning views of the enchanting Hallstätter See. And, for those looking to capture the magic, the iconic ‘Photo View’ is the perfect spot to snap a picture.
Salzburg
Musical Heritage
Salzburg is alive with 'The Sound of Music’. Fans can walk in the footsteps of the real Trapp family and discover film spots all around the city. Plus, Salzburg sings with the legacy of Mozart, drawing visitors from around the world.
Hohensalzburg Fortress
Ruling the Salzburg skyline from Festungsberg, Hohensalzburg Fortress stands as one of Europe’s grandest fortresses. Inside, its museums are packed with relics of past eras – prince-archbishop portraits, medieval armour, and artefacts from the wartime. History buffs and thrill-seekers alike will find their hearts racing here!
Mirabell Palace and Gardens
Stepping into Mirabell Palace, crafted by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich back in 1606, feels like entering a fairy tale! Meanwhile, Mirabell Gardens offer a picturesque backdrop where ‘The Sound of Music’ came alive – who wouldn’t want to twirl among the flowers like Maria?
Vienna
Ringstrasse
Welcome to the Ringstrasse, Vienna's fabulous fashion runway for iconic buildings! With the majestic Hofburg Palace – home to Austria’s president and a few ghosts of emperors – this boulevard is a must-see. Visitors can wander on foot, hop on a tram, or take a coach.
Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a dazzling display of Baroque elegance! Its gardens are like a painter’s palette, filled with colour thanks to the vibrant display of flowers. Inside, the rooms have been graced by the likes of Emperor Franz Joseph, Mozart, and even Napoleon!
St. Stephen’s Cathedral
As Vienna’s shining symbol, St. Stephen’s Cathedral stands with iconic spires that reach for the sky – the north and south towers are the perfect spots for panoramic views. And let’s not forget the Pummerin, Austria’s largest bell, which hangs out in the north tower.
Food and Drink
One of the best things about travelling? The food, of course! Every destination has its own favourites – the dishes locals swear by and visitors can’t stop talking about. To make things easier, we’ve picked out four must-try treats from this region, with a little flavour of what they’re all about.
So… which one’s making your mouth water?
Wiener Schnitzel
Wiener Schnitzel is a tender veal cutlet, coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. And yes, by Austrian law, it must be veal to earn the name! Often served with a wedge of lemon and a side of potatoes or salad, it’s a must-try bite of Austrian pride.
Erdäpfelsalat
Simple, satisfying, and oh-so-Austrian, Erdäpfelsalat is a traditional potato salad with a Vienna twist. Made from tender boiled potatoes and finely sliced onions, it’s dressed in a tangy mix of vinegar, oil, and mustard – no mayo in sight! Light yet full of flavour, it’s often eaten as a side with Wiener Schnitzel.
Tiroler Gröstl
Straight from the mountains of Tyrol, Tiroler Gröstl combines crispy fried potatoes, onions, and tender bits of beef or pork, all sizzled together in butter until golden and glorious. It’s crowned with a fried egg and often served with a zingy side of pickles or horseradish.
Apple Strudel
No trip to Austria is complete without a helping of apple strudel, the country’s signature dessert. This flaky, golden pastry wraps around a spiced filling of sliced apples, sugar and cinnamon. Dusted with icing sugar and best enjoyed warm, it’s a treat that’s as elegant as it is indulgent.
