Today we’ll visit Innsbruck, capital of the Tyrol region. A charming city, Innsbruck is surrounded by the high Alps and is a fantastic place to visit. It has plenty of charm thanks to its impressive architecture, including the splendid Golden Roof landmark, which dates from 1500 and was built for Emperor Maximilian I when he married Bianca Maria Sforza. Alongside this, there are also a wide choice of shops and restaurants in the quaint Maria-Theresien Strasse, and other attractions include the Tyrolean State Museum, Innsbruck Cathedral, Ambras Castle and much more.
Included excursion, which takes us across the spectacular Fern Pass and into Germany. We head to the village of Hohenschwangau, where we enjoy an included visit to King Ludwig II’s famous Neuschwanstein castle. The panoramic views from each side of the castle are truly breathtaking. Built in the 19th century, King Ludwig encouraged plans for this German Gothic castle but unfortunately died before the end of its construction. This romantic castle, upon which Walt Disney based Sleeping Beauty’s Palace, is one of Germany’s most popular images. We include entrance into the castle where you will enjoy a guided tour.
*Please note: During the tour of Neuschwanstein castle you will be required to climb 165 steps and descend 181, so suitable footwear should be worn.
We head along the beautiful Ziller Valley, through the Tyrolean landscapes to call at the charming town of Mayrhofen. Mayrhofen boasts beautiful views, as well as a pretty town centre. Why not relax with a drink, soak up the surrounding scenery and watch the world go by? Alternatively, take the Penkenbahn Cable Car to enjoy the incredible views (at own cost).
Join us for an optional excursion into Italy and to Merano, where we’ll find stunning medieval architecture, including fairy tale castles, churches and narrow alleyways. Generally best known as a spa resort it is located within a basin, surrounded by mountains, at the entrance to the Passeier Valley. We’ll get to spend the day here, taking in the superb sights and attractions during our excursion.
