We travel through Germany and make a stop in the magnificent city of Würzburg. This former royal seat is idyllically situated on the Main River and offers a vibrant atmosphere and an endearing charm.
We continue to reach Bavaria and our hotel in Bad Aibling for four nights.
Today we visit the fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig’s most outlandish creation, brimming with turrets and pinnacles. The castle was built as a private refuge in the mountains and has appeared in several movies, as well as being the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland.
On our optional excursion today, we visit Salzburg, one of the most beautiful cities in Austria. Salzburg has something to offer every visitor, from lovely squares and medieval lanes to Gothic churches and quaint cafés. The city dates back to Celtic times and prospered in the Middle Ages on account of the salt industry from where the city derives its name. Many beautiful baroque buildings are a testament to the city’s illustrious past when it was controlled by the powerful and wealthy bishops. The city is also famed in the world of music, as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and more recently as the setting for “The Sound of Music” and is also home to the Getriedegasse, one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Austria. On arrival in Salzburg we include a guided sightseeing tour to introduce you to the city before spending the afternoon at leisure.

Day 4: Salzburg

Today we explore the winter landscape of Lake Chiemsee. Often called “the Bavarian Sea” we take a boat to Herreninsel Island (“Men Island”), where we will visit the famous Herrenchiemsee Palace. This Palace was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1878 and was meant to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles, however it was never completed. We continue by boat to Frauenchiemsee Island. The smaller of the two islands, Frauenchiemsee houses a Benedictine nunnery and a small village. After free time we return by boat to Gstadt before returning to the hotel by coach.
Our holiday draws to a close today as we travel back to Belgium for an overnight stay.

A great opportunity to visit two amazing castles, both of which operate English language tours (included in holiday cost) with the German /Austrian alps as a backdrop. Also a UNESCO world heritage site medieval walled town, much of which dates back 800 years. If the weather obliges, then everywhere is snow covered and this really does make it a 'winter wonderland'. Base hotel is clean, very comfortable and offers a great food -all delivered with typical German efficiency! Drinks inclusive was a nice bonus.
