Warner Littlecote House, Hungerford

B4192 , Hungerford , RG17 0SU

History enthusiasts will be in their element when staying at Warner’s Littlecote House. Built in the mid-1500s, this magnificent Grade I-listed Tudor manor has a fascinating past, having played host to Romans, a Tudor tryst, and even a Civil War army. Henry VIII courted Jane Seymour in the Great Hall at Littlecote House, and the airborne landings on D-Day were planned in the library, which served as the headquarters of the US 101st Army during World War II. Stunning architecture features throughout, most notably the famous Orpheus mosaic floor, while the hotel’s grounds are equally beautiful, with 34 hectares of historic parkland and landscaped gardens. All of this is complemented by an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, tennis courts, a bowling green, and the fantastic on-site restaurant, The Popham – a stay here will be truly special.

Hungerford is a welcoming market town tucked along the Kennet & Avon Canal, surrounded by countryside that feels wonderfully easy to explore. Its antique shops and independent cafés give it a gentle character, while nearby footpaths offer quiet waterside strolls. Marlborough sits just up the road with its broad, historic High Street and a great mix of places to browse. Blenheim Palace is within reach as well, offering grand architecture and vast landscaped grounds for an unhurried day out. If you venture a little farther, Stonehenge brings world-famous mystery and ancient history to the mix. With peaceful scenery on the doorstep and remarkable landmarks close by, Hungerford makes a lovely base for discovering this part of the South.
