Uncover Orkney's Ancient Secrets

Orkney, an ancient cluster of 70 islands brimming with history and dramatic coastlines, lie off the north west coast of Scotland. Our local guide will help you to discover ancient civilisations, archaeological delights and bountiful wildlife from our base in the island capital of Kirkwall.

8 Day Itinerary

  • Day 1:

    Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then to our hotel in the Highlands for one night.

    Included meals: Dinner

  • Day 2: The Orkneys

    We continue to the very tip of Scotland, stopping for a brief photo opportunity at the famous John O' Groats sign.

    We then board the ferry with our coach from and take the 90 minute sailing to Orkney.

    The day concludes with a tour along the shoreline of Scapa Flow – famous as the naval refuge during both world wars.

    We stay for four nights in the capital, Kirkwall, with its 12th century St. Magnus Cathedral at the 3-star Kirkwall Hotel.

  • Day 3: Guided Tour of the Orkney Isles

    Our local guide joins the coach for a memorable day out. As the day unfolds, the islands' Neolithic ancestry is evident as many ancient monuments, stone circles, settlements and tombs are visited - a testament to its UNESCO World Heritage status.

    The tour includes a scenic circular tour of the island visiting most of the main sites including 5000-year old Scara Brae, Churchill Barriers, Ring of Brodgar, Stennes Standing Stones and Italian Chapel. Along the way, listen to the tales of Viking intruders, wartime exploits and immerse yourself in Orkneys' rich maritime heritage.

  • Days 4 and 5: Days at leisure in the Orkneys

    Enjoy days at leisure to explore. Kirkwall is the largest town of Orkney and this vibrant town remains Viking at heart.

  • Day 6: Inverness and Loch Ness

    We take the ferry back to the mainland this morning and begin our journey back through the stunning Highlands.

    We travel through spectacular scenery, stopping briefly in Inverness, the 'Capital of the Highlands' before journeying alongside the mystical Loch Ness.

    We continue onto our overnight hotel for one night.

  • Day 7: Trossachs National Park

    Today we pass the impressive Glencoe and continue onto the Trossachs National Park, home to the serene Loch Lomond.

    We then continue further south for our overnight stay.
