Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then on to Tenby and our hotel for four nights. We enjoy a sherry and a mince pie, followed by dinner and entertainment to get us into the spirit of the season.
Today we travel first to bustling Haverfordwest, an attractive and historic county town in Pembrokeshire. The River Cleddau runs through the town, offering many picturesque riverside walks.
We then continue to St Davids, Britain’s smallest cathedral city, named after Wales’ patron saint. The cathedral, which gives the city its status, is built from local stone with beautiful pink and grey hues. Nearby are the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace, and the town is filled with other historic buildings, as well as quaint shops and cafés.
Later, we return to the hotel to get ready for a festive evening. Enjoy a glass of festive punch served, followed by 'Christmas dinner' and a visit from Santa. Entertainment will continue in the bar afterwards.
This morning, we visit Carmarthen, a town steeped in legend and history. Known for its mythical connection to Merlin, whose alleged birthplace is said to be nearby, Carmarthen was once home to an old oak tree believed to be Merlin’s Oak. According to legend, when the tree fell, so too would the town – and when it finally came down in 1978, Carmarthen suffered a terrible flood! You’ll have free time to soak up the festive atmosphere in the indoor markets and town centre, perfect for picking up some Christmas shopping.
This afternoon brings one of the highlights of the week – a nostalgic journey back to a bygone era with a vintage steam train ride. We board at Abergwili for a 90-minute round trip through the scenic landscapes of South West Wales. Travel in 1950s-style compartments with large picture windows and plenty of space to relax. Friendly staff will serve tea, coffee, or mulled wine, accompanied by a mince pie and Christmas cake to enjoy during your journey.
This evening, enjoy dinner followed by entertainment at the hotel.
Today is a free day for you to explore Tenby at your own pace. There’s something magical about discovering Tenby in the winter months. Wander the narrow cobbled streets and browse the independent shops selling handmade jewellery, local crafts, and delicious Welsh treats. The town glows with festive charm under its Christmas lights and offers plenty of cosy pubs with roaring fires. If you prefer the outdoors, wrap up warm and take a bracing walk along South Beach for fresh sea air, or enjoy breathtaking views from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.
Don’t forget to return in time for your included festive cream tea at the hotel this afternoon! Later, we gather for our final dinner, followed by evening entertainment.
We depart the hotel this morning full of festive cheer and return home.
