We travel to Paignton to board the Heritage steam train that chugs along the glorious Torbay coast over the wooded hills to Kingswear from where we take the foot ferry across to the 'yachtie town' of Dartmouth where you will see all kinds of craft on the beautiful river.

Wander around the historic town, overlooked by the famous Britannia Royal Naval College, choc-a-bloc with pretty streets and gift shops and home to a 600-year old English Heritage Castle, a delightful walk from the centre.

We return to the hotel via Totnes, a great place to explore, once a historic market town and now with a reputation for alternative therapies, small independent shops, and its promotion of ethical products, whole foods and fair trade goods.
