The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway was built in 1903 to link farming communities with the market town of Welshpool and provide them with an outlet for their produce. Operated at first by the Cambrian Railways, the line was taken over by the Great Western and then British Railways. Today the ‘Llanfair Train’ sits in the platform at Welshpool Raven Square with the resplendent engine steaming gently at the head of charming balconied carriages which promise the traveller a wonderful ride along a country by-way. The train negotiates a viaduct and river bridge, climbs the notoriously steep Golfa Bank and steams serenely through beautiful countryside. From the window, the observant passenger may spot the occasional heron, goosander, woodpecker or buzzard. As the train runs through the Powis Estate, pheasant and deer can be seen, and everywhere is a wide variety of wild flowers. The line follows a river valley, twists round a mill and runs through the middle of farms.

The coach/minibus drivers were all great. We got the impression that this was the first time this particular trip had been run (October 2025) as there were a couple of issues. These concerned walking distances and a replacement excursion( Lake Bala railway) that was a bit lacking in scenery etc. Hopefully these will be ironed out next time.

The holiday was excellent except there where places that were not easy for pushing a wheelchair, especially in Shrewsbury. The paths were very narrow and not easy to push on, nothing could have been done about it as the coach could not stop any nearer to the café doing afternoon tea. The feeder coaches/taxi were brilliant, Hotel staff were very good and caring, the room was excellent for my husband who needs a wheelchair.

4* Hotel Rooms, food choice and service mostly good standard. Ordering the following day’s dinner led to confusion due to serving staff having to ask and people changing their minds or our difficulty remembering! (It might be a good idea to number the tables for easier identification of who ordered what.) Trips out were interesting and mostly as described. Disappointed Shrewsbury cathedral was closed - ( only open in the mornings, 8am to 1pm.) A good amount of free time after the trips out allowed us to explore the canal walk, sit on the terrace chatting to other guests, take advantage of spar treatments, have a swim or simply relax in the cool of our room. The tour driver had a lot of interesting facts about places we passed through en-route and visited. He was particularly good at handling a few awkward situations, especially as he was called on at the last minute to lead this tour which wasn’t his normal. Our driver on the return journey was not very clear about expected time of arrival on last drop of the day. Overall an enjoyable, pretty relaxed trip in the lovely Shropshire/mid Wales area.

Weather was fantastic. Pat our driver was very good. Hotel was lovely but restaurant service was very slow. Had good fun and laughs with my fellow travellers.
