The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is Scotland’s only mountain railway and the highest in the United Kingdom. Open year-round, it offers a unique and fully accessible experience for all ages and abilities. The 2km funicular journey takes just 5 to 8 minutes, carrying visitors to the Ptarmigan Top Station.
Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the Grampian Mountains, the ancient Caledonian pine forests of the Rothiemurchus Estate, and shimmering Loch Morlich in the heart of Glenmore Forest Park. At the summit, the Ptarmigan Top Station features the UK’s highest restaurant and the Cairngorm Gin Bar, where panoramic views across Strathspey can be enjoyed from the viewing terrace – the perfect spot to experience the mountain environment first-hand.
This afternoon, we stop at the Glenmore Visitor Centre and café before meeting the famous Cairngorm Reindeer Herd – the only free-ranging reindeer in Scotland. Tame and friendly, they’re a delight to encounter and a true Highland highlight.
Though often associated with Christmas, these reindeer roam the Cairngorm Mountains year-round, rotating between the paddock in Glenmore and their hillside pastures. While feeding isn’t permitted, visitors can enjoy the unforgettable experience of seeing these gentle, iconic animals up close in their natural environment. We return to the hotel and enjoy dinner this evening.
Please note: operation of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway is weather dependent.

This morning, we enjoy a nostalgic journey on the Strathspey Heritage Railway, which operates beautifully restored historic steam and diesel trains from Aviemore. Sit back and take in the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands as you travel through Cairngorms National Park, following the River Spey between Aviemore, Boat of Garten, and Broomhill. The twenty-mile round trip runs along part of the original Highland Railway mainline, offering a true taste of rail heritage.
In the afternoon, we visit the Speyside Centre, a family-run business featuring a restaurant, café, gift shop, and whisky emporium – the perfect place to browse for locally made Scottish products.
