Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then to Northumberland and the 4-star Slaley Hall Hotel for a four-night stay. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink on the terrace and admire the view before dinner.
After breakfast, we visit the delightful Grade I English Heritage property, Belsay Hall and Gardens. Built in 1817, the hall features Greek and Italian architecture and is open to view, along with the medieval original castle. The Middleton family has lived at Belsay almost continuously since the 13th century, cultivating the 30 acres of gardens surrounding the hall over the years. The Quarry Garden has its own microclimate which means all sorts of exotic plants grow here; it also houses the largest collection of Rhododendron in the country.
We return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure. Why not enjoy a relaxing swim or a round of golf? (Extra charges may apply, please pay locally.)
After breakfast, we visit imposing Alnwick Castle. Located in the heart of Northumberland, this castle is one of the most iconic historic sites in the country and is often used as a set location for films and TV shows such as Robin Hood, Transformers, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. The castle has been home to the Percy family for over 700 years, and with over 900 years of history to uncover, a fascinating experience is guaranteed.
We will also have free time to explore Alnwick. This medieval town still retains its charm, and a visit to the atmospheric market square is a must. Browse the local shops, watch the world go by from one of the delightful cafés, or pick something up from one of the second-hand book stores.
We return to the hotel early afternoon and relax before dinner.
After breakfast, we follow the route of the famous Hadrian’s Wall. Built to guard the wild northwest frontier of the Roman Empire, the wall is 73 miles from coast to coast. Made up of forts, towers, turrets and towns, it is widely considered one of the most important Roman monuments in Britain.
We also call at the ancient market town of Hexham and visit Chesters Roman Fort. Here, we learn more about what life was like for the men, women and children on the edge of the Roman Empire’s most northern outpost.
We return to the hotel to enjoy a last sunset cocktail before dinner.Return home.
