Today, we enjoy a journey on the Settle-Carlisle Railway – one of the most scenic and impressive railways in the UK! The last great mainline railway to be built and completed for passenger travel in 1876, building the railway presented many challenges due to the remote and harsh landscape. With 21 viaducts, 14 tunnels and 72 miles of track, it was advertised as the most picturesque route to Scotland, and the Victorian and Edwardian travelling public took it to their hearts. The route takes us over the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct and through the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor.
We start the day with a visit to Bury Market – voted the best market in Britain! Right in the heart of the town and attracting locals and visitors alike, you'll find over 370 independent traders selling everything from fashion and footwear to, of course, black pudding!
Later in the day, we take to the tracks of the East Lancashire Railway for a stunning journey through the beautiful scenery of the West Pennines. With a fascinating history, stretching back to the beginning of the industrial revolution, the East Lancashire Railway has been carrying passengers and goods around the region for almost 200 years.
We round the day off calling at popular Oswaldtwistle Mills, where we enjoy tea and cake before returning to Blackpool.
Enjoy a day at leisure in Blackpool. From the iconic Blackpool Tower to the three traditional piers, there is so much to keep you entertained.
Alternatively, why not join our optional excursion to Southport? Browse the bustling shops on Lord Street, enjoy endless fun at the traditional seaside attractions on the elegant pier, or relax on the beautiful beach. Wayfarers Arcade, with its glass and iron-domed roof, is also worth a visit.
