A Whole New Light: Matlock Illuminations and the Peaks

Regional departure by coach, and then we journey to Derbyshire. We make a stop in the pretty town of Bakewell.

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park, Bakewell is a charming market town renowned for the Bakewell pudding and the Bakewell tart, both closely associated with the town and enjoyed by visitors from around the world. Wander the centre through attractive stone-built streets lined with independent shops, cafés and traditional pubs. The medieval five-arched bridge is one of its best-known landmarks, and the riverside paths make for a gentle walk, often in the company of ducks and swans.

We then head to Buxton and our hotel for a two-night stay.

Today is free to explore Buxton at your leisure, with the hotel ideally positioned in the heart of the town. Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Peak District, Buxton is a beautiful spa town celebrated for its elegant architecture, natural mineral springs and glorious countryside. Admire the magnificent Crescent, an iconic Georgian landmark inspired by Bath's famous Royal Crescent, and stroll through the beautifully landscaped Pavilion Gardens, a 23-acre park with lakes and Victorian architecture.

We enjoy an included late lunch as we head to Matlock Bath in the mid-afternoon.

The Matlock Illuminations are one of Derbyshire's most popular seasonal attractions, transforming this riverside town into a glittering display of lights, colour and entertainment. The highlight of the event is the procession of decorated, brightly lit boats, created by local groups and organisations, that glide along the river after dark. Visitors will also find a lively fairground, family entertainment, food stalls and a festive atmosphere throughout the season.

Following breakfast, we have a little more free time in Buxton before we journey home.
