Regional departure by coach, then we head to Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. Here we discover one of England's finest Elizabethan country houses, the masterpiece built by the legendary Bess of Hardwick and renowned for its impressive glass windows and striking architecture. On screen it's best known as Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and features in Mary Queen of Scots, where history and the magic of the screen come together. It also offers a beautiful garden to explore plus a coffee shop.
We then make our way to our hotel for a two-night stay and enjoy dinner this evening in the restaurant.
Chatsworth House is one of Britain's most frequently used stately homes for film and television. Its grand interiors, gardens, sculptures and parkland have appeared in numerous productions. Perhaps its most famous screen appearance was when Chatsworth stood in for Pemberley, the home of Mr Darcy, in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice. It was also featured in the 2008 film The Duchess starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, and in Death Comes to Pemberley. It has also been the set for multiple TV productions including Peaky Blinders and The Crown.
Begin your visit by touring the magnificent house, wandering through more than 25 spectacular rooms and admiring its world-class art collections, including the Painted Hall, State Rooms, Chapel and the famous Sculpture Gallery. Head to the stables area for lunch or refreshments in one of the many cafés and discover the gardens in the afternoon, including the spectacular Emperor Fountain, the Cascade and Cascade House, Rock Garden and The Maze.
We return to the hotel for our evening meal.
This morning we visit our final filming location, Haddon Hall. Haddon has hosted many film and TV productions, including The Princess Bride, three Jane Eyre films, Becoming Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, Pride & Prejudice, and The Other Boleyn Girl starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. The most recent full-length feature film shot entirely at Haddon is Firebrand, starring Jude Law and Alicia Vikander.
Explore one of England's best-preserved medieval manor houses, including the Great Hall featuring original stone floors and a large fireplace. The Long Gallery is considered the highlight of the house and is 110 feet of Elizabethan architecture. The grounds and gardens are also beautiful, and guests can enjoy scenic walks along the River Wye.
We journey home in the afternoon.
Accessibility Information
Hardwick Hall: All main facilities and ground floor areas such as the Great Barn and Old Hall offer step free level access. Other points of interest are accessed via ramps/slopes or steps.
Chatsworth House: The main house entrance and ticket area is situated on the ground floor and is accessible throughout. There is a lift in the house, allowing access to the entire visitor route for visitors with restricted mobility. Electric scooters cannot be used inside the house. However, wheelchairs and other smaller mobility aids may be used.
Haddon Hall: The location of Haddon Hall on a limestone bluff means that there are steep gradients throughout. The interior is challenging for those who find steps, undulations and changes of level difficult. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or wheeled mobility aids but may be suitable for visitors using walking sticks or frames. Most steps do not have handrails.
