Today we take a journey on the Settle-Carlisle Railway – one of the most scenic and impressive railways in the UK! The last great mainline railway to be built and completed for passenger travel in 1876, the building of the railway present tremendous challenges to traverse the landscape.

With 21 viaducts, 14 tunnels and 72 miles of track, it was advertised as the most picturesque route to Scotland, and the Victorian and Edwardian travelling public took it to their hearts. The route takes us over the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct and through the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor.

Our included excursion today takes us to the beautiful Lake District. The spectacular landscapes have inspired so many writers and poets, and we'll start the day in Bowness-on-Windermere – one of the region's most popular destinations. The village lies on the shores of Lake Windermere and is filled with charming shops and quaint tearooms.

We continue to bustling Ambleside at the head of the lake, where there will be free time before we make our way to the pretty village of Grasmere.

Situated at the very heart of the Lake District, this charming village is famous for its literary connections and is home to the tiny Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, which lies in the grounds of the parish church.

Our visit to the Tower Ballroom was not of the best. On arrival there seemed a lot of confusion about the booking, which eventually was sorted out by our driver. We were then directed to a seating area on the opposite side of the Ballroom to where Afternoon Teas were being served. It then became apparent that we had to Self Serve our Cream Tea from a Servery and then carry it on a tray back to our seats amidst others waiting to dance. It was not the best of experiences. We suggest it needs a review. Apart from the above, all went well,. good hotel and food. other trips successful, all shepherded by an excellent driver. Michael & Joan Tolson

Staying at the Delta Marriott Hotel, Garstang and the excursions were excellent. The reason for 4 stars was the cream tea at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. We were not sat together as a group, you had to collect your own tea tray and the scone was served on a paper plate with a bamboo knife.
