Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then to Belgium for an overnight stay.
We depart Belgium and head through Germany to the Harz Mountains, where we stay for four nights.
We enjoy an exhilarating journey onboard the steam-hauled Brocken Railway, which takes us from Wernigerode up to the summit of the Brocken Mountain. This is the highest peak in the Harz region and the home of Germany's highest narrow-gauge station. During the Cold War period, the Brocken was in East Germany and very much off-limits to western visitors.
Returning to Wernigerode, enjoy free time to explore its quaint market square and admire the half-timbered houses.
Relax at the hotel, or why not join our optional excursion to Goslar?
The Old Town of Goslar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring over 1,500 half-timbered houses – a wonderfully scenic setting. It is also an ancient imperial city with remnants of a proud past, including the palace from the Holy Roman Empire period and 'Kaiserstuhl', the imperial throne. A guided tour will uncover Goslar's secrets – both past and present.
with an extra experience
This optional excursion is available to pre-book or you can book during your tour.
Today we discover another treasure of the Harz region, Quedlinburg. One of Germany's best-kept secrets, the Old Town has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status and is home to one of the best-preserved collections of medieval buildings in Germany.
During the day we also take a ride on the Selketal Railway, which takes us through the verdant forests to Alexisbad.
We retrace our steps across Germany to our overnight hotel in Belgium. En route we pay a visit to another great UNESCO World Heritage site, Aachen. Whilst here, be sure to visit the stunning cathedral, which was the final resting place of the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne.
Return home.
Our team (based right here in the UK) will be more than happy to talk you through things - just give us a buzz!
We will stay for four nights at the 3-star Superior Ahorn Hotel in Braunlage, nestled in the heart of the Harz Mountains. As well as a lovely location, with welcoming bars and a restaurant, the hotel also boasts an indoor swimming pool and fitness room.
Overnight hotels will be in city-style hotels.
