This morning we board our coach and head to the city of Nottingham, known for its role in the Robin Hood legend.
From Old Market Square, Nottingham’s shopping streets spread out in every direction. Spacious avenues provide quick direct routes across the city’s compact centre, allowing you to reach even the most distant shops in no time at all. Perhaps visit one of the cities many eateries for lunch before heading to the Theatre Royal to enjoy an afternoon performance of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Seating will be in the front central block of the Dress Circle as we watch Jack trade the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which then grow into a massive beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack now needs to outwit the evil giant to become rich beyond his wildest dreams. With plenty of laughs, music and special effects, this will be an afternoon of entertainment not to be missed.
After the show, we return by coach to the hotel for dinner this evening.
After breakfast, we set off towards the Peak District for a scenic return journey aboard the Peak Rail. While you admire the rolling landscapes, enjoy a glass of wine with mince pies.
After our return rail journey, we continue to Chatsworth House. A historically rich residence, Chatsworth has been the ancestral home to the Dukes of Devonshire for centuries. Its origins trace back to 1549 when Elizabeth and William Cavendish acquired the land for a sum of £600. This was Elizabeth's home, the Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. Over her eventful life, she married four times, and in the process, rose to a position of great power and wealth. With her marriage to William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber, they established Chatsworth as their home and had eight children. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today.
Once inside the house, be amazed by the wonderful festive displays with beautifully decorated rooms, each one a sight to behold – you can truly feel the magic of Christmas at Chatsworth!
