Later, our coach takes us to Froghall Station, where we’ll join the Churnet Valley Railway. This morning, our coach transfers us to Wirksworth Station, where we’ll join the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, a former terminus of the Midland Railway which was reopened in 2002. We’ll have some free time at Wirksworth Station, with its museum and quaint shop, before enjoying a fantastic roundtrip train journey taking in the beautiful scenery of the Peak District.

Afterwards, we travel by coach to Chatsworth House and Gardens for an afternoon visit. Home to the Dukes of Devonshire for many generations, the land was purchased by Elizabeth and William Cavendish in 1549 for £600. This was the home of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. During her lifetime she married 4 times and rose to a position of great power and wealth. In 1547, she married William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber – they had eight children and made Chatsworth their home. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, in 1567 saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today. This afternoon, you have included entry into the House and Gardens to explore at leisure.

Later, our coach returns us to our hotel for dinner this evening.
