Today, we travel to Whitby – one of North Yorkshire’s gems. Enjoy free time to explore the cobbled narrow streets and pick up some thoughtful Christmas gifts from the unique shops. Why not walk the 199 steps up to the church and ruins of Whitby Abbey – made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula – or take a stroll along the harbour walls?
You will also get to enjoy one of Whitby's famous culinary delights – fish and chips – with an included lunch. We return to the hotel where you can relax before dinner.
Today, we enjoy an included excursion to stately Castle Howard. Set in a thousand acres of sweeping parkland, this is one of England's finest historic houses. The house was constructed in 1699 and took over 100 years to fully complete, spanning the lifetimes of three earls. The great fire of 1940 destroyed much of the building, including its original dome, but there has since been a restoration and conservation project to restore the house to its former glory. The gardens and grounds are also extensive, with highlights including a walled garden, woodland, temples and monuments. You may recognise the house as a filming location for many famous TV shows and films – Bridgerton, Young Victoria and Brideshead Revisited to name a few.
Today, we visit charming York. Still surrounded by its original Roman walls, the city’s turbulent past has been influenced by the Vikings, resulting in over 2,000 years of fascinating history to uncover. Stroll through the Shambles and browse the independent shops, visit the majestic cathedral, or simply enjoy a relaxing walk along the river.
Return home.
