Celtic Coastal Connections

Wales and Ireland share a long, intertwined history shaped by geography, language, migration, and cultural exchange. They sit only about 108 miles apart and share a special bond as Celtic siblings. Their languages derive from the same Celtic common ancestor, and school children in both countries are taught their native language as part of the curriculum. They are two nations that love a good story and share rich folklore and mythology, and trade between the Welsh ports and Irish shores has been recorded since Roman times. Join us on a unique and fascinating journey to explore both these ancient countries in one holiday, with twin-centre stays in pretty South Wales and warm Irish hospitality in Ireland's Ancient East.

Local departure or Home Connect service, then to South Wales for a three-night stay. Enjoy dinner this evening.

We start our Celtic journey today with a visit to explore the medieval early Christian Celtic movement that flowed between Wales and Ireland. St David, the patron saint of Wales, is considered the greatest figure that brought Christianity to the Celtic tribes in western Britain. St Aidan travelled from Ireland to Wales to study under St David in the 6th century, and their meeting influenced religious life across both countries. Today, we visit St Davids, the smallest city in Britain, where you will have time to explore the famous cathedral which is classed as a world landmark and the focus of many pilgrimages.

This afternoon we drive to the pretty coastal town of Tenby, famous for its golden beaches, pastel‑coloured Victorian houses, and medieval town walls. Wandering Tenby's narrow cobblestone streets and bustling squares is a highlight in itself, offering cafés, shops, and beautiful harbour views.

We return to the hotel to relax and enjoy dinner this evening.

Today we relax and explore Carmarthen with a day at leisure. Carmarthen is often described as the oldest continuously inhabited town in Wales, a place where Roman history, Arthurian legend, and modern Welsh culture all combine in this fascinating market town.

Enjoy browsing the independent shops and cafés and exploring the remains of the old medieval castle or its many museums. The Gwili Steam Railway, which is located just on the outskirts of the town and just a short taxi ride away, offering visitors a heritage steam train experience through the beautiful Welsh countryside.

This morning, we visit historic Pembroke, whose location as a port on the Celtic Sea historically linked Wales with Ireland. You will have some free time to explore this medieval town, famous for its impressive castle, which was the birthplace of Henry VII and is considered one of the best‑preserved Norman castles in Wales.

We board our ferry from the port to Rosslare on the southern Irish coast this afternoon. Relax and enjoy the views as we leave the Welsh coastline behind across the Celtic Sea. We arrive early evening and then journey to Waterford, where we will receive a warm Irish welcome and dinner at our hotel.

Today we explore Waterford, Ireland's oldest city with over 1,000 years of history. With Viking roots, medieval streets and coastal scenery, plus a vibrant food culture, it has so much to offer.

This morning, we will enjoy a visit to Waterford Treasures with a guided walking tour of the Viking Triangle to orientate you to the city, followed by a tour of the Medieval Museum. Highlights include the 13th-century Choristers Hall and the Mayor's Wine Vault.

You will then have free time to explore at your leisure, and your ticket includes entrance to one of the other museum attractions in the city, including the Bishop's Palace, the Irish Museum of Time or the Irish Silver Museum. There are also plenty of shops and cafés in the Viking Triangle area to explore. Why not stop for an Irish coffee?

We enjoy dinner tonight at the hotel. After, why not try a pint of Guinness in the Timbertones Bar? Part of the hotel, this is an authentic, traditional Irish pub with evening entertainment.

Today we head for another gem of Ireland's Ancient East – Wexford. Before the Vikings arrived, the region was part of the Gaelic kingdom of the Déise, one of the oldest Celtic groups in Ireland. Wexford is a mix of history, cafés, and culture, all packed into a walkable centre. Wander the colourful streets of the old town with its painted buildings and explore the independent boutiques and craft stores. Take a stroll along the quay front, one of the most atmospheric parts of the town. Watch fishing boats and ferries, stop for a coffee with a sea breeze, and enjoy the views across Wexford Harbour.

We then head for New Ross and the Dunbrody Famine Ship, which gives a unique insight through costumed performers and themed exhibitions into what it was like for Irish immigrants as they embarked on a brave journey to a new life in America, taking their Celtic roots to the new world.
