High atop the iconic White Cliffs of Dover sits the most iconic of all English fortresses. From the mighty medieval keep to the labyrinth of secret wartime tunnels below, a visit to Dover Castle is a must.
During the afternoon, we make the short journey along the coast to Walmer Castle and Gardens. Built by Henry VIII, the castle has been standing guard over the Kentish coast since Tudor times. It has developed over the years from a coastal fort into an elegant seaside retreat for politicians, aristocrats and royalty.
Discover the history of the castle, from the time of its construction to repel threats of invasion. Walmer Castle has over eight acres of elegant gardens, woodland and pleasure grounds, including the Broadwalk, Glen and Queen Mother’s Garden, which can all be enjoyed to this day. The castle is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and over the years, many who held that title have left their mark on Walmer’s landscape.
Following our fascinating visits, we return to our hotel in Canterbury for dinner and relaxing evening.
Spend the day at leisure to explore the beautiful city of Canterbury, where the skyline is dominated by the stunning cathedral. The ancient ruins of St. Augustine’s Abbey and St. Martin’s Church also form Canterbury’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Alternatively, join our optional excursion to see another Kent seaside gem, Margate. Follow in the steps of Del and Rodney from the classic 'Jolly Boys' Outing' episode of Only Fools and Horses and enjoy the traditional delights of one of the UK's oldest seaside resorts!
with an extra experience
This optional excursion is available to pre-book or you can book during your tour.
Following breakfast, we head to the delightful coastal town of Whitstable on the north Kent coast.
Whitstable is like no other town by the sea. Its traditional charms, rich maritime history and strong arts culture complements the modern town.
Part of the Canterbury District, Whitstable's main claim to fame is its oysters which remain an intrinsic part of the town's character and are celebrated every July at the Oyster Festival.
We then head along the coast to the traditional resort of Herne Bay. Famous for its historic pier and picturesque seafront, Herne Bay offers plenty of things to do all year round. The distinctive 80ft Victorian clock tower watches over the seafront, while Waltrop Gardens has a wonderful flower display for those wanting to relax. Don't forget the traditional pier for some seaside fun!
Following breakfast, we return home.
