Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then on to the 4-star Cambridge Belfry Hotel and Spa in Cambourne near Cambridge for a four-night stay.
Today we travel to nearby Cambridge – a place that is home to more Nobel Prize winners than any other city. Punting dates to medieval times and was used to navigate the marshy flatlands north of the city – it is now a delightful way to admire the sights.
Back on dry land, there will be some free time to explore – perhaps visit King's College Chapel, explore one of the many museums or galleries, or simply take in the architecture of this university city.
This morning we visit historic St. Albans, with its skyline dominated by the cathedral and a blend of architecture throughout the city. Why not visit the traditional street market? Steeped in history with a special Royal Charter granted in 1553, it is perfect for picking up a local souvenir.
Later, we return to the hotel for some time at leisure to relax or perhaps enjoy a treatment in the spa (charges may apply).
Wonderfully compact and easy to explore, Ely is England’s second smallest city. Ely's most famous historical resident was Oliver Cromwell, who lived here for 10 years and whose former house you may choose to visit. The house has been recreated to demonstrate what 17th century domestic life would have been like, and you can also view an exhibition on the Civil War.
If history isn’t your thing, the beautiful waterside area offers plenty of delightful cafés and restaurants – the perfect spot to watch the river boats sail by.
We include entry to Ely's magnificent cathedral. Dominating the skyline, it is one of England's largest and most beautiful cathedrals. Inside the cathedral you can visit the Stained Glass Museum (entry included), and admire the unique structure of the Octagon Tower. Often doubling as Westminster Cathedral, you might recognise the cathedral from several films and TV shows such as The Crown, The Young Victoria and the King's Speech.
Return home.
