We spend the day in Berlin. The Christmas markets are one of the highlights of the festive season, as the city is lit up with a blaze of lights. Close to the hotel, the Christmas market on Landsberger Allee is great fun for the whole family, with a number of carousels and rides creating a festively fun atmosphere.
With the scent of waffles and hot mulled wine already drifting through the cooler air, one of the best places to visit is the WeihnachtsZauber at the newly renovated Gendarmenmarkt. Decorated with more than a thousand sparkling baubles and twinkling lights, the truly magical festive atmosphere is set against the stunning backdrop of Berlin’s most impressive square. It has plenty of culinary delights alongside the traditional Bavarian and Austrian dishes, such as Neuburger Rahmbrot (bread with melted cheese) or Kaiserschmarren (sweet pancake strips). There are also other Bohemian and Berlin specialities and various gourmet restaurants in heated and wonderfully decorated tents.
Another recommendation is the Berliner Weihnachtszeit, taking place between the Rotes Rathaus (Berlin City Hall) and St. Marienkirche, the Christmas market, which in comparison to other Christmas markets is still very new, but has many highlights. Traders and artisans sell their goods on the Old Berlin market lane with the façades showing the original illustrations of Berlin houses from around 1900.
These are just some of the many different markets in the city to explore at leisure.
Join our included excursion to the impressive Charlottenburg Palace. Romantically and colourfully illuminated at Christmas time with glittering light installations, discreet laser beams and colourful lights, the palace square invites you to take a cosy stroll around the stalls. In addition to arts and crafts and the usual roasted almonds, the stalls in wooden huts or pagoda tents also offer unusual gift ideas and invite you to go Christmas shopping.
Afterwards, we will head to Spandau Christmas Market in the west of Berlin. The entire old town of Spandau forms the atmospheric backdrop for the traditional market. As well as a huge light-speckled tree and gingerbread-house-style stalls, there’s also a stage with live music! Weave between more than 400 wooden stalls or perhaps stroll through the Garden of Christmas.
Today, you can join our optional excursion to Potsdam, where we will be able to explore this historical city at leisure, discovering everything from its many museums to landmarks such as the Sanssouci Palace, St. Nicholas' Church and Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate.
As well as this, why not enjoy the Potsdam Christmas Market, which stretches from Luisenplatz, across Brandenburger Straße, to Bassinplatz. The market offers regional delicacies, as well as hand-crafted gifts and souvenirs such as hand-knitted woollen hats, colourful artwork and Christmas tree decorations.
