Fancy being part of something that only happens once every ten years? In 2030, the world-famous Passion Play returns to Oberammergau for its 43rd performance.
The Passion Play is a huge open-air production telling the story of the last days of Christ. It has been staged in this one Bavarian village since 1634, when locals promised to perform it every decade if the plague spared them. It did, and they've kept their word ever since.
Around 2,000 villagers appear in it – cast, choir and orchestra, all of them residents rather than professionals. It runs for the best part of a day, in German, on a covered stage with the Alps behind, and every ticket for it is spoken for long in advance.
