In 2020, the beautiful Bavarian village of Oberammergau will host again the world-famous Passion Play, performed as a tradition by the local inhabitants every ten years, for almost four centuries.

The story began in 1633, when Central Europe was suffering from the Thirty Years War, which resulted in widespread poverty and disease, with the Black Plague spreading and claiming many lives.  The village vowed that if God were to spare them from this devastating illness ravaging the region, they would perform a play every ten years, depicting the life and death of Jesus. The play was first performed in 1634 on a stage set up in a cemetery above the graves of the recent plague victims. Now performed in a dedicated theatre holding nearly 5,000 spectators, the 42nd Passion Play expects 500,000 visitors from across the world.
