Sorry, this holiday is currently not on sale

We embark the MPS Rotterdam in Cologne, the largest city on the Rhine. Enjoy an evening meal, as we moor overnight in this superb city and depart very early the next morning. We sail onwards to Koblenz, thought of as one of Germany’s oldest towns.

Arriving in Koblenz by mid-afternoon, we will have plenty of time to explore this historical town. The town is situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, with some of the best river views available at the town’s famous Deutsches Eck (German Corner). It’s here that we’ll also discover Koblenz’s monument to Emperor William I. After exploring, return to the ship for dinner; we moor here overnight.

In the morning, we sail to Braubach and arrive as we enjoy breakfast. You’re sure to feel as though you’ve stepped back in time when exploring this medieval town, thanks to its beautifully-preserved half-timbered houses. After lunch, it will be time to sail to Rudesheim, a winemaking town in the magnificent Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll have some free time to explore Rudesheim after dinner - why not visit the Drosselgasse, a 15th-century street lined with busy restaurants and wine taverns?

Tomorrow, we’ll enjoy our first included excursion - a guided tour of the Rheingau Valley. Travelling by coach, we’ll be able to take in the enchanting sloping vineyards and charming scenery this valley is known for. We then return to the ship and continue our journey along the Rhine to reach Worms this evening.

Worms dates from pre-Roman times, and evidence of this can still be found in the city today. Admire its cathedral, boasting some of the finest Romanesque architecture in Germany, and uncover the history of Martin Luther. It was here that the theologian was declared a heretic by the Roman Catholic Church and began the Protestant Reformation. By midday, we continue our river cruise to Mainz, a Roman fort city.

Departing Mainz before lunchtime, we enjoy an afternoon’s sailing - take in the breath-taking scenery from our Sun Deck. We will reach Boppard by mid-afternoon and will soon discover why this town is known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’ - admire its beautiful scenery and historical town centre, before we return to the MPS Rotterdam this evening.

Awake to stunning riverscapes the next morning, as we sail from Boppard to Linz. After breakfast, we will have some time to take in this mesmerising city, known for its captivating culture and historical architecture. It will then be time to return to the ship for our afternoon cruise back to Cologne, where we enjoy an included panoramic tour. Marvel at Cologne Cathedral, the city’s medieval gates, and the old City Hall.

The next day, we disembark the MPS Rotterdam after our amazing river cruise.

    Panoramic Cologne

Join us as we explore this historical city! Cologne has strong Roman ties and is the fourth-largest city in Germany, with more than one million inhabitants. The city is located on both sides of the River Rhine and is home to the famous Kolner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). During World War II, the inner city of Cologne was completely destroyed and was then fully reconstructed in the 1950s.

With our expert guide, we see many of Cologne’s fascinating sights, including the ancient Roman city walls, which were the longest in Germany; the impressive medieval gates; and the twelve large Romanesque churches, which are located in the confined area within the boundaries of the medieval city walls. Many of Cologne's churches rank among the most important in Western Europe.

We also see the world-famous 4711 – the original Eau de Cologne headquarters; the medieval Old City with its impressive town houses, dating back to the 14th century; and the historical Rathaus (City Hall).

    Rheingau - Schloss Vollrads
    Rheingau Valley and Wine

Our tour takes us into the beautiful Rheingau valley, famous for its stunning scenery and sloping vineyards. Our first stop is the pretty little town of Eltville, known for its sparkling wine (Sekt) and roses. Here you can discover the charming medieval old town centre, with its countless historical buildings, noble estates, aristocratic villas, beautiful courtyards and romantic promenade.

We then continue into the Rheingau Valley to reach Schloss Vollrads. This estate claims to be the oldest winery in Germany and has been making wine for over 800 years. We’ll enjoy a tasting of two wines here – Kabinett and Spatlese, or similar.

After this, we then head to nearby Schloss Johannisberg (entrance not included). Perched high up in the hills overlooking the Rhine, you can admire majestic views of the Rheingau. A monastery was built on the site by the Benedictine monks of Mainz, which was later consecrated to John the Baptist, in 1096. The grand Schloss dates back to 1716.

Boppard - Pearl of the Rhine

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’, Boppard has over 2,000 years of cultural history, making it a fascinating place to visit. This town’s treasures can be best seen on our guided walking tour, as we pass through the romantic squares and small lanes of the Old Town.

We then join Ralf on his Rhine Express tourist train as he takes us around Boppard. The trip around this picturesque town takes in the Romanesque-Gothic St Severus Church and the Roman excavations dating back to the 4th- and 5th-centuries. We also head through the south gate of Boppard’s medieval town wall, the Binger Gate, at the end of the Old Town and pass the charming district of ‘Balz’. The tour continues, journeying past the Electoral Castle, along the Rhine and to the Carmelite Church before arriving back at our ship.

    Wine glasses
    Evening Wine Tasting and Siegfried’s

Join us this evening as we board the Little Tourist Train to our first port of call, the world-famous Siegfried's Musik Kabinett just off the famous Drosselgasse.

This Museum is home to one of the world’s biggest collections of self-playing musical instruments, where visitors can admire over 350 exhibits. Our tour concludes with a visit to Adolf's wine cellar to taste his famous local wines.

Here, we learn about the different wines of this region, the history of winegrowing in the region, the way the wines are produced and their particularities. Following this we get to taste the local wines, which are served with a pretzel to neutralize the taste of the different wines. A great way to spend an evening in Rudesheim!

Guided Walking Tour of Linz and St Martins Parish Church

Join us for our guided walking tour of Linz, a pretty little town. Linz was first mentioned in the official documents of 874, and our guided walking tour will take us past the colourful half-timbered houses, picturesque squares, winding little streets and the impressive town hall - one of the town’s main sights.

We then continue to the parish church of St Martin’s; the church was built between 1206 and 1214 at the most elevated spot of the town. A former church, which was located at the same place, had been destroyed during the fights of Otto IV and Philip of Swabia in 1198. During reconstruction work in 1981 the remains of graves and foundations belonging to the previous church were discovered.
    Historical Koblenz

Get to know one of the oldest towns in Germany on our guided walking tour around the historical Old Town. The charming and romantic streets between the St. Castor’s Basilica and 'Liebfrauenkirche' (Church of Our Beloved Lady) represent today’s main tourist attraction of Koblenz.

Of course, the sightseeing tour would not be complete without a visit to the Monument of Emperor Wilhelm I at 'Deutsches Eck' (German Corner) and the town’s landmark, the 'Schangel' Fountain in the courtyard of the present Town Hall.
    Excursion Placeholder
    Historical Worms
Join us as we explore the historical city of Worms, located in Rhineland-Palatinate and with a fascinating heritage stretching back to pre-Roman times. There is plenty to discover in this beautiful city, from ancient architecture to excellent sights.
    Marksburg Castle
    Majestic Marksburg

Marksburg Castle rises high above the right bank of the Rhine River, overlooking the town of Braubach, and is the only castle in the Middle Rhine to have escaped destruction or ruin. The castle dates back to 1117 and has been inhabited for over 700 years. Through the centuries, there have been many additions to the castle - mainly in the 17th and 18th-century - but still it maintains its medieval character.

Join us as we make our way through the drawbridge gate and up the path to the courtyard; here we see the Great Battery, which houses the cannons which once protected the castle and the town of Braubach.

We continue through the kitchens, dining area, bedrooms and the chapel, which is dedicated to Saint Mark, and from which the castle gets its name. The chapel is home to some exquisitely-preserved medieval paintings.

We then make our way to the torture room, which is located in the castle stables - despite its brief tenure as a prison, there is no record of torture ever being used in the castle.
