    Ahr Valley
    Enchanting Ahr Valley
Today we explore this beautiful region, known locally as the ‘wildest daughter of the Rhine’. The origins of this name are quite obvious when you look at the spectacular scenery, as the Ahr River meanders its way through the picturesque valleys, with breath-taking rock formations, idyllic castles, ruins and terraced vineyards rolling down the hillsides.

We visit the charming town of Ahrweiler, known as the ‘metropolis of red wine’. The town is surrounded by medieval town walls, and many of the buildings are original, giving it a truly medieval atmosphere. We continue our journey back to the ship, passing through pretty little villages along the way.

    OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

    Beethoven statue, Bonn
    Beethoven and Bonn
Join us for a guided walking tour of this fascinating city. Once the capital of West Germany and often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Romantic Rhine’, Bonn has so much to offer. Admire its impressive University, the former residence of the electors of Cologne, the Minster Cathedral, the Beethoven monument, the market place with the old town hall, and much more.

We continue on to Beethoven Haus – birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven - found on Bonngasse 18-26. Germany's greatest composer was born in December 1770, and at the tender age of 12 he was already creating sonatas and symphonies. The museum is home to the largest privately-owned Beethoven collection in the world. Portraits, original manuscripts and instruments can all be found here.

    Geysir
    Maria Laach and the Geysir
We head first to the Geysir Museum in Andernach and the Discovery Centre, where we learn about the natural phenomenon of the cold water geyser in Andernach. Interactive exhibits, experimental stations and a multimedia show open up a new and fascinating approach to the scientific geothermal phenomenon.  Make a journey deep down into the earth and accompany a CO2 molecule on its adventurous journey from the interior of the earth to the water fountain at the surface, experiencing with all your senses what happens before the geyser erupts.

We then travel by boat to the Andernach Geyser, which lies in the idyllic landscape of the Rhine Valley on the peninsula Namedyer Werth, a local nature reserve. Enjoy the beautiful sights of the city of Andernach, the Rhine Valley, and the nature reserve from aboard a comfortable boat.

We arrive at the world's tallest cold-water geyser - here, experience nature with all your senses. Listen to the hissing and gurgling sound when the geyser erupts, see the majestic fountain and, if you are not afraid, draw nearer and you will be able to smell and taste the water. After this fantastic experience, we’ll head to Maria Laach.

This Benedictine abbey was founded in 1093 and is widely considered a masterpiece of German Romanesque architecture. Though relatively short in length, the abbey boasts a multitude of towers and turrets, giving it the appearance of a fairy-tale fortress, which is further accentuated by its scenic lakeside setting.

    Cologne Cathedral
    Panoramic Cologne and Cathedral

Join us as we explore this historical city! Cologne has strong Roman ties and is the fourth-largest city in Germany, with more than one million inhabitants. The city is located on both sides of the River Rhine and is home to the famous Kolner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). During World War II, the inner city of Cologne was completely destroyed and was then fully reconstructed in the 1950s.

With our expert guide, we see many of Cologne’s fascinating sights, including the ancient Roman city walls, which were the longest in Germany; the impressive medieval gates; and the twelve large Romanesque churches, which are located in the confined area within the boundaries of the medieval city walls. Many of Cologne's churches rank among the most important in Western Europe.

We also see the world-famous 4711 – the original Eau de Cologne headquarters; the medieval Old City with its impressive town houses, dating back to the 14th century; and the historical Rathaus (City Hall).

We then continue to the world famous Cathedral (entrance included). We find out when construction began and why it took until the 19th century to complete. You will see the world-famous Gero-Crucifix of the 10th century and the medieval stained glass windows.

    Rheingau - Schloss Vollrads
    Rheingau Valley and wine
Our tour takes us into the beautiful Rheingau valley, famous for its stunning scenery and sloping vineyards. Our first stop is the pretty little town of Eltville, known for its sparkling wine (Sekt) and roses. Here you can discover the charming medieval old town centre, with its countless historical buildings, noble estates, aristocratic villas, beautiful courtyards and romantic promenade.

We then continue into the Rheingau Valley to reach Schloss Vollrads. This estate claims to be the oldest winery in Germany and has been making wine for over 800 years. We’ll enjoy a tasting of two wines here – Kabinett and Spatlese, or similar.

After this, we then head to nearby Schloss Johannisberg (entrance not included). Perched high up in the hills overlooking the Rhine, you can admire majestic views of the Rheingau. A monastery was built on the site by the Benedictine monks of Mainz, which was later consecrated to John the Baptist, in 1096. The grand Schloss dates back to 1716.
