Hell And Trondheim
We visit the small village of Hell. Make sure you have your camera's ready for a picture outside the local freight office! After free time we continue to Trondhiem, seat of the ancient Viking Kings. Trondheim is the oldest of Norway's major cities and its old heritage can still be traced in and around the city centre. The marvellous Nidaros Cathedral, the second largest church of Northern Europe, towers over the city centre and boasts stunning architecture.
Helsinki was built along a series of odd shaped peninsulas and islands jutting into the Baltic coast along the Gulf of Finland. Streets and avenues curve around bays, bridges reach to nearby islands and ferried ply among offshore islands. Helsinki has a character quite different from the othe Scandinavian capitals and in many ways is closer in mood and looks to the major cities of Eastern Europe. For years an outpost of the Russian empire, its shape and style was originally modelled on its powerful neighbour's former capital, St Petersburg.
We visit Lapland and the resort of Rovaniemi, the official home town of Santa Claus. At the Santa Claus village, we send personalised postcards, see Santa's reindeer and meet Santa himself. Receive a certificate as we cross the Arctic Circle and make our way to the Tankavaara Goldmine Village, one of the well-known sights in Lapland. Experience the gold fever for yourself as we learn the history of gold panning and have a go at making some for ourselves. We continue to the mountainous village of Saariselka.
We witness the Midnight Sun with the only things separating you from the North Pole are the sea and the Svalbard Islands. Experience the magic of one of nature's wonderful phenomena on those endless summer nights when the sun never makes it below the horizon.
We enjoy an included visit to the Sami Village to gain an insight into traditional Sami life. Slow down, breathe in the fragile fragrances of pristine northern nature as we watch a short movie on arrival and then have free time to explore this national treasure.
