Kroller Muller Museum - Vincent Van Gogh

This art museum houses a wide range of artworks from the 19th and 20th centuries, and is famous for its selection of Vincent Van Gogh work. The Van Gogh Gallery showcases pieces such as ‘The Potato Eaters’, ‘The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night’, and ‘Sorrowing Old Man (‘At Eternity's Gate’)’, and many, many others.

The collection was first amassed by Helene Muller and Anton Kroller, for whom the museum is named after, being opened by Muller in 1938. Van Gogh had a difficult life, but he was still able to create a multitude of breathtakingly beautiful paintings, using his love of colour and his fascinating way of seeing the world as inspiration. He was instrumental in the post-impressionist movement, being a source of inspiration for many artists in the future.

Many other artists’ works are displayed at the museum, such as Paul Signac, Henri-Edmond Cross, Joseph Csaky and Pablo Picasso. There’s also a famous sculpture garden at the museum, which we’ll get to explore while we’re there.

    Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a marvellous city and is filled with wonderful attractions. One of the most impressive is the Van Gogh Museum, which we’ll visit while we’re on holiday. This museum is famous for being home to the largest collection of the artist’s work, and is dedicated to displaying it and inspiring other artists and visitors alike.

Van Gogh is known for his love of nature, and this is shown in many of his works of art. He regularly depicted scenes of the countryside, although he’s also known for his pensive and mysterious paintings of ‘peasants’ and the poor, along with his own self-portraits and still life works.

He was born in the village of Zundert, and at the museum we’ll learn how his time spent there influenced his love of the countryside and his talent for art. He moved to Paris in 1886, but the big city life grew tiresome for him so he again relocated, this time to Arles in the South of France. We’ll learn how it was here, in Arles, that he suffered his notorious breakdown, and how he recuperated in a psychiatric facility. We’ll also be taken through his final years by looking at his artwork, and examining his last painting - ‘Tree Roots’.

While travelling home, we’ll take a stop in Nuenen, where Van Gogh lived between the years 1883 and 1885. It was here that he painted a number of his most famous works of art, such as ‘The Potato Eaters’, and a statue of Vincent can be found in the town’s park.

We’ll spend some time exploring the town, and will be able to find out more about its history.
