Discover the beautiful region of Bavaria, at this magical time of year when Germany’s towns and villages host their traditional Christmas markets. Staying in historical Wurzburg, we’ll be able to explore this wonderful city at leisure, as well as stopping at the Christmas markets in Koblenz, and visiting the markets in Nuremberg and Rothenberg.
There’s no better way to enjoy the festive season than to visit some of Europe’s best Christmas markets! Our holiday to Bavaria will allow us to do just this, as we discover the markets in nearby locations from our base in Wurzburg. This wonderful city is filled with splendid sights, such as the Fortress Marienberg, the Old Main Bridge and the Wurzburg Residence. We’ll also be able to discover the Christmas markets in Wurzburg city centre while at leisure here, and will visit the markets in Koblenz during our journey to Wurzburg.
We’ll have two included excursions to make the most of as well, as we make our way to Nuremberg first to admire the pretty Christmas decorations and to soak up the amazing atmosphere here. Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is famous for being one of Germany’s largest, with everything from delicious gingerbread to handmade trinkets on show in the many stalls.
Our next excursion will take in the markets in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. These charming markets are always a treat to visit - be sure to sample some of the local delicacies, such as Schneeball, which are tasty pasty ‘snowballs’!

En Route: Koblenz
We’ll call for a short stop in Koblenz, for chance to see the traditional Christmas market held in the picturesque old town, with around 130 festively decorated wooden stalls, offering beautiful decorations and seasonal gift ideas.
Today we visit Bavaria’s second largest city, Nuremberg. Historically the city was one of the most important centres of the Holy Roman Empire and is now known as one of the best examples of what visitors would expect from a “typical” German town. It has a huge Old Town in its centre with sights including the castle, city walls, and the colossal St Sebald Church.
Charming Rothenburg ob der Tauber is set on Germany’s famous ‘Romantic Road’ and boasts some of the most impressive medieval architecture in Europe. Home to the famous German Christmas Museum, decorations can be bought here all year round, but the festive markets make the town an even more magical place to visit.
This beautiful town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to Europe’s largest preserved old town quarter, where the facades of buildings are richly decorated with fascinating detail. The traditional Christmas markets make a visit to Bamberg even more magical.
Nuremberg Guided City Tour
A city fit for a king; don’t miss this opportunity to discover the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire, where the beer is as dark as the coffee. The cityscape of Nuremberg, Bavaria’s second largest city, is dominated by the stunning castle, a mighty fortress built in 1140.
Of course, Nuremberg is also known for the activities that took place here before and during the Second World War, and our guided city tour will uncover infamous sites including the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
Rothenburg Guided Walking Tour
Ensure you see all the best bits of Rothenburg with an interesting guided walking tour. Time has almost stood still in this beautiful town, with its wealth of medieval buildings.
