    OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

    Basel
    Bustling Basel by Vintage Tram
The town of Basel lies in the north-western corner of Switzerland. The town shares its borders with France and Germany and is the heart of this tri-national region - the Dreiländereck (three countries' corner). The river Rhine curves right through the city and divides it into two parts. Situated on the south and west bank is Grossbasel (Great Basel) with the medieval old town at its centre and on the north bank is the Kleinbasel (Little Basel), featuring much of the cities night-life.

Join us as we discover Basel from a different angle with our guided city tour in a distinctive vintage tram from the 1920s. Sit back, relax and savour the sights and sounds as our tram winds its way through the city centre whilst our guide regales you with facts and anecdotes from the city's 2,000-year history and points out the cities main sights including Basel Münster, built 1019-1500 in Romanesque and Gothic style, the impressive Rathaus (Town hall) and the medieval buildings lining Markplatz. So let yourself be whisked back in time and explore Basel in an extra special and entirely different way. All aboard!
    Alsace
    Discover Alsace

The Alsace region has changed hands between Germany and France on several occasions throughout its history. The local culture is distinct and has some of the most beautiful cathedrals and churches in Western Europe.

We drive along the famous Alsace wine route, passing many beautiful towns and villages, such as Rosheim. This beautiful Alsatian town is home to some of the oldest civilian buildings in the Alsace, including the Romanesque House.

We continue past the pretty village of Boersch, with its winding narrow streets and beautiful houses, before passing Ottrott, a picturesque village situated in the foothills of the Vosges mountains. This village is known for its castles and the monastery of Mont Sainte-Odile.

We finally head to Obernai, the birthplace of St Odile. Obernai is one of the remaining Alsace towns to have retained its traditional character and charm, with its medieval defences, fortified towers, half-timbered houses and narrow lanes.

During our walking tour we see St Odile’s fountain, Saint Pierre and Paul Church, the impressive belfry rising up to 59.6 metres, and the Six Bucket Well. We conclude our tour with a wine tasting at a traditional Alsatian winery to sample three of the local wines of this region.

    Dusseldorf promenade in summer
    Discover Dusseldorf
Enjoy a guided tour of this spectacular city during our holiday, known for its excellent culture. Some the wonderful sights here include the city’s eclectic mix of architectural styles, such as the Neuer Zollhof, as well as its fantastic selection of museums and the Rheinturm.
    Koblenz
    Historic Koblenz & Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Get to know one of the oldest towns of Germany on our guided walking tour around the historical Old Town. Koblenz has a long history that spans some 2,000 years, it owes its name to the Romans, who settled here and called it ‘castellum apud confluentes’ which roughly translates as ‘castle at the confluence of the rivers’. Join us as we explore the charming and romantic streets between the St. Castor’s Basilica and "Liebfrauenkirche" (Church of Our Beloved Lady). Of course, the sightseeing tour would not be complete without a visit to the Monument of Emperor Wilhelm I at "Deutsches Eck" (German Corner), in 1945 damage was caused to the statue of Emperor Wilhelm I, which had stood here since 1897. It wasn’t until 1993 that a new statue was inaugurated and today it is a popular viewing platform for tourists. We also see the town’s landmark, the "Schängel" Fountain in the courtyard of the present Town Hall.

We then ascend by cable car from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer to the impressive Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which rises 118 meters above the Rhine river, offering fantastic views over Koblenz and the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle at "Deutsches Eck" (German Corner). The Fortress is Europe’s second largest preserved fortress behind Gibraltar and was constructed by the Prussians between 1817 and 1828, however, its origin dates back to the first century AD. The fortress is home to the Rhineland-Palatinate State Museum, with its permanent exhibition on photography, the “Greif” cannon - once the largest in the world and an exciting collection of technical relics. The small climb to the top of the new observation platform is rewarded with breathtaking views of the distant Eifel Mountains on a clear day. We descend by cable car.

    Speyer Cathedral
    Historical Speyer & Cathedral
Dominated by its Romanesque Cathedral, Speyer is one of Germany’s oldest cities and is the resting place of eight medieval emperors and kings of the Salian, Staufer and Hapsburg dynasties. During our guided walking tour we visit the stunning Cathedral - a UNESCO heritage site and the largest of Germany's three Imperial Romanesque Cathedrals.

Speyer Dom survived destruction by the French armies in 1689 and is today considered one of the finest examples of High Romanic architecture in Germany (entrance included). We head through the beautiful historical old town seeing the Alportal (Old Gate). Built between 1230 and 1250, the gate is one of the 68 towers and gates within the city walls. We continue to Trinity Church, constructed in memory of the protest that took place at the Diet of Speyer.
    Rudesheim
    Panoramic Rudesheim

One of Germany’s most-visited towns, Rudesheim is famous for its winemaking. Join us on our guided walking tour of this wonderful UNESCO town as we see Eagle Tower, which dates back to the 15th century, the Market Square with St Jakobus Catholic Parish, the impressive Klunkardshof building, and the famous Drosselgasse, with its many restaurants, shops and wine bars.

We also see Bromserburg Castle, Bosenburg Castle and the Bromserhof. We then make our way to the cable car station as we glide over the hillside vineyards, before reaching the Niederwald summit.

The famous monument here was erected in the years 1877-1883 and symbolizes the re-establishment of the German Empire after the Franco-German War 1870-1871. Here we enjoy the magnificent panoramic views over Rudesheim’s old town and the Rhine Valley, with its many green isles dotted along the silvery Rhine.
