    About Newcastle-upon-Tyne

    Newcastle is perhaps most famous throughout the UK for its mining history. Once one of the UK’s most important mining areas, Newcastle still retains much of its coal mining history - for instance, the Victoria Tunnel stretches beneath Newcastle’s streets and was once used to transport coal. 

    However, Newcastle’s history goes even further back than this - one of the city’s most popular attractions is Newcastle Castle, which is the oldest building in the city.
