Mapping the Castles on the Rhine
When is a river not just a river? That’s not a riddle, and the answer is simple: when it’s the Rhine. Every inch of its 766 miles tells a story (and one you’ll want to hear) as it winds its way through some of Europe’s most stunning landscapes. Starting as a trickle in the Swiss Alps, it flows through Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Liechtenstein. We can’t promise you’ll live happily ever after if you visit, but we’re certain you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you choose a river cruise or coach holiday to Germany, all you have to do is hop aboard – we’ll handle the planning, the parking and the perfectly timed photo stops!
What’s so great about the castles of the Rhine River?
INFOGRAPHIC GOES HERE
We’re repeating ourselves here, but when is a castle not just a castle? You know the rest. But don’t just take our word for it: the Rhine’s castles are so legendary that the Upper Middle Rhine Valley became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
This 40-mile stretch of river contains no fewer than 40 castles, all proudly perched on hilltops. There are so many that we can't cover them all without the list becoming as long as the Rhine, so here are some of the highlights.
- Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
- Reichsburg Cochem
- Marksburg Castle
- Schönburg Castle
- Rheinfels Castle
- Stahleck Castle
- Heidelberg Castle
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
While Ehrenbreitstein Fortress may not be a traditional castle, it has guarded the Rhine for centuries and has the stories to prove it! Therefore, we think it’s earned its right to be on this list.
Built on the site of an older fortress destroyed by the French in 1801, it’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
You see it during a river cruise or one of a number of coach holidays – and as the second-largest fortress in Europe, if you don’t get a glimpse as you pass by, we might suggest you need to visit a certain high-street optician!
