excellent value for money

this holiday was excellent value for money. the food was well cooked with 4-5 choices for each course.super fast service from our waitress victoria, breakfast plentifull that set you up for the day.We had a large bedroom overlooking the village which was really clean with plenty of tea +coffee provided. The entertainment was typical scottish +also very good. The only downside was the lounges +restaurant were very cold which spoilt things a bit, many people were sitting down to dinner wearing fleeces for warmth over their evening clothes, this is the first shearings hotel i have had to do this in,apart from that we had a wonderfull holiday +would reccomend this holiday .

Lovely relaxing holiday in wonderful scenery

We had a fantastic break. The hotel was well organised - 3 coaches in! - but everyone was friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and well stocked with hot drink making facilities and had a lovely view of the village and nearby hills (£24 upgrade each for the view - well worth it!)The excursions were through beautiful scenery with a knowledgeable and entertaining local driver, with frequent stops for refreshments. The meals were served by friendly and efficient waiting staff. We kept our same table and waitress for the whole week, which made dining with 154 other people feel less impersonal. Dinners were 3 courses, with about 4 choices for each course, and a different menu each day, followed by tea/coffee.We didn't take advantage of the evening entertainment - not really our 'thing', but many others did and seemed to have a great time. There are other hotels in Strathpeffer that are open to non-residents. I was a little concerned that the soundproofing wasn't very good, so we could clearly hear both the TV room and entertainment in our room, on the first floor, but everywhere went quiet by 11pm on most nights, so it was not a problem for us.There are many walks from the hotel, some of which are described in detail in the hotel foyer and in the information book in the bedroom. There are also a golf course and bowling green, nearby - both open to visitors at certain times of the week. There are several cafes in the village serving appetising lunches, and The Highland Hotel also offers a very reasonably priced packed lunch service, which we made use of for the homeward journey.

beautiful scenery

we went to this hotel last december for a five day break with our friends, the weather was quite bad on the way up with heavy snow but the driver andy got us there safely,he was a very good driver and imformative and quite a funny guy.the excursions were great and the scenery we saw on the way to ullapool was breathtaking,a real must.the hotel is beautifull and so is strathpeffer, the hotel had all the christmas decorations up and lovely trees and with having the snow outside it really got us all in the festive swing, great atmosphere.if i had to nit pick it would just be to say that it was a very long journey from the east coast where we live for a five day break,we would definatley go again but on the 8 day holiday this time.another great break for us with shearings.

Highland Wonder

We made the long journey north to the highlands for our holiday in strathpeffer and it was certainly worth the trip. The hotel staff were very attentive and the evening entertainment varied and good. Our included excursions were very well planned and we opted for the optional east to west coast tour which was excellent. Our driver was extremely efficient and friendly.Highly recommended

Village beautiful, hotel downstairs lovely, but bedrooms need overhaul, totally outdated - wallpaper in the shower !!

Strathpeffer is lovely but journey too long, exacerbated by the 2 hour change over period for coaches in Yorkshire. In fact has put us off going with Shearings again because this adds extract time to your journey.

We just loved the scenery and friendliness of the Highland people

The whole holiday was a joy. Our driver had an in depth knowledge of the Highlands and was a superb driver. The itinery was varied and enjoyable with spectacular scenery (mostly in the rain!) Snowballs on the Cairngorms was memorable. The hotel was immaculate, and the entertainment was very pleasurable.

Excellent short break

Very good relaxing holiday, good food, comfortable accommodation, good trips. Excellent value for money. One niggle - the time spent at the M1 interchange, dreadful, no seats available, sold out of hot rolls etc. There for nearly an hour standing does not do my heart condition any favours.

Nice Week At Strathpeffer

Hi,We had a week at Strathpeffer Easter 2011 and we had a good week with excellent weather too!. The Hotel is very pleasant and in a really nice postion in the Town close to everything. The Hotel is a typical Shearings offering - a little tired in places but very good value all in all with nice breakfasts and evening meals and polite pleasant serviceThe excursions were very good with the driver quite a laugh which made it all a worthwhile experience .We went for a few walks up over the Hills around the Town and the views over to the Moray Firth were excellent.I would recommend this Hotel to anyone as a good place to stay whether by Coach or self drive.

Strathpeffer Trip

This was a lovely hotel with good all round service. Strathpeffer itself is very quiet, but there are some pleasant walks. Go into Inverness by service bus if you want a full day shopping, the organised trip only gave us 2 hours there, barely enough time for lunch. The journey from home to Strathpeffer was horrendous. We were travelling for over 12 hours. Arrival at hotel was around 8.30pm. We went to bed after evening meal as we were exhausted. Normanton exchange centre is a nightmare (we call it the open prison). Shearings trips are good apart from Normanton. Enjoyed the trip, but won't go again with Shearings, can't stand the thoughts of Normanton again. Pity really.

Did this holiday in February and thoroughly enjoyed it. Did not do the tours as I walked up Ben Wyvis and cycled to Luichart Dam, got the whole of the countryside to myself, more or less.Staff, food and quality of service all first class, did'nt do the evening entertainment but did enjoy the complimentary drinks. All in all, excellent value.

The entertainment is good usually in the scottish theme. Staff are very helpfull, will help in anyway they can to make your stay as good as possiable. Warm hospitality in the frozen north!!

We visited Strathpeffer in the middle of May in what must have been the coldest week on record for the time of year - snow in the Cairngorms! Our room was warm and comfortable and the hotel provided a welcoming atmosphere. The dining room was well organised, the food was very good and served most efficiently by our waitress. The entertainment was good and provided a taste of Scotland for the visitors, most of whom were from England. I liked that the hotel involved the local dance troup one evening, although I won't say much about the quality of the piping accompaniment! The included excursions were enjoyable and our driver portrayed a knowledge of the area. We did not go on the optional excursions since we had visited Ullapool in the past, but used our free time to do a bit of sight-seeing in Inverness and Dingwall utilising the service bus which stops just down from the hotel. This was a last minute break for us and proved to be excellent value for the money.

Lovely area to visit and well looked after by all staff.

This holiday is well worth the long journey up to the Highlands for its beautiful views and stunning scenary. Our 2 drivers were informed and entertaining throughout. The hotel was comfortable although our room was a little small for a double and we had to negotiate around the bed carefully. Also the view of the outside fire escape wasn't great. The food was very good and the staff extremely attentive.

if you want to see scotland

the hotel was very good with good entertainment in the evening. The trip's out, we did not go to Aviemore as we have been many times so we explored the village which although small is interesting, then we walked into the forest. the trip to Ullapool was brilliant the drivers commentary was perfect and his chat made the whole day. I must say all the drivers we have been with have been excellent, all very helpful and know there stuff about the places they take you to.

The food was awfull, always cold and worse than basic....starter choice cold timmed ravioli?....i mean please. The entertainment was god awfull, childish comedian with bad taste, mocking the hyland accent, we found ofensive. The young girls who did the highland dancing were lovely and raised money for charity too.The bathrooms desperately need updating, no fan and no windows, mmmThe staff were very friendly, waitresses lovely, cleaners good.Hotel beautifull, quiet village, no traffic noise, nice walks. The drivers were safe! and carefull. they were full of info, but what they didn't know they made up, shame.Outingsbasic.You get what you pay for, we went in the cheaper month of May, i would have been upset if we paid more.

Overall a good experience once at the resort

Services at Gretna Green were a nightmare on the journey up. Too many people needing to be catered for, any simple refreshments having to be taken standing up in some sheltered corner. Even the cafeteria had long queues. The heather centre part of an excursion could easily be dropped from the itinery, even the cafe there could not cope with the queues and long delays resulted. Food was good once it arrived.

This short break was excellent.

The coach driver "Andy" made this long journey to Strathpeffer part of the deal, as it were, he is knowledgable and interesting knowing instinctively when to explain holiday details and facts about it, without being boring as many of the drivers are.The hotel is very clean and well organised although like the rest of Strathpeffer very Victorian, the panelled Arts and Crafts decor in the bar/entertainment area is brilliant but for us that brilliance did not extend to our room which only had bathing facilities in the on suit, and we distinctly asked for a shower.Having sunshine makes a world of difference when on holiday and we were blest with highs of 26º for five days 21 to 25 May, Strathpeffer is clean tidy and friendly and we felt very safe in it's environs, beautiful in the sun and a pleasure to explore, with its Victorian railway station, Spa Pavilion and it's lovely Village Square and the local people are very friendly. I'm not so sure what one would do about rainy times though. Our driver Andy was as always very good on the inclusive trips to Cromarty on the Black Isles and to Cairngorm Mountain where he explained the history without the boredom of the well organised picturesque trips, an absolute pleasure to see.

We found this holiday excellent value for money The hotel was clean and comfortable the staff welcoming and helpful. Our driver Andy was excellent and very informative from the moment we joined at Normanton. Wish more of Shearings drivers were like him.Like another reviewer our only complaint was the food whilst it was hot and well cooked we thought the portions meagre we would have liked to have seen more veg with the evening meal eg 3 potatoes between two people not sufficient, . On saying that we are thinking of visiting again so we can do the railway trips.

Everything about the holiday was well up to the high standards we've come to expect from Shearings

This holiday was, in fact, the second Shearings holiday we've had at this hotel. The first visit was on an eight-day break which was in summer and included not less than three included railway journeys through most of the scenic Scottish Highlands. This latest holiday was a five-day break and in the middle of winter.Despite the season, and the fact that some of the local area attractions were closed, the Highlands Hotel, its comfort, amenities, entertainment standards, food quality etc were ,in our view, excellent. The only drawback, on both occasions, was the travel distances and journey times involved. We note with interest, that Shearings have now overcome this problem by offering &-day breaks, with a stop-off stay in each direction. On both occasions we felt that the cost of the of the holiday was extremely reasonable. Well done Shearings

HAD A GREAT TIME

We really enjoyed our trip to Strathpeffer, overall very good value, just a couple of drawbacks, 1, was the changeover at Stretton and then another in Gretna Green not too bad on the outward journey but seemed forever on the return journey. 2, for the size of the hotel there was only one small lift which was out of order on a number of occasions. In the main it was a lovely break.

enhaced by beautiful weather this was a great experience,to go to the top of the Cairngorms on such a day,you could see as far as the eye could see,the trip to the black isle was also interesting, and Inverness is well worth a visit,Strathpeffa is a quiet village,a nice place to visit is Ding well, about 5 miles away, there are good places to walk although myself am not able to do.the hotel had good service and entertainment, but don't know what we could do if the weather was bad.

Excellent value for money!

Being a Yorkshireman, I am always looking for a bargain, and what a bargain this trip is. We had never been on a Shearings holiday before, but the price attracted me, as we wanted to try out Scotlad. I figured out I couldn't do it in diesel alone, never mind included drinks and food. Add in the trips and it was a no brainer. We were impressed with the organisation from the pick up in Rotherham, change over at Normanton and the frequency of the stops en route. The hotel is old, but well kept and clean. Staff were friendly and chatty. We were not too fussed about the entertainment, but it was well recieved by most guests. The food was adequate, with a good choice bearing in mind the price we paid. A special mention must go to our driver, Andy, who was both knowledgeable and entertaining on the trips, he is a credit to the company. He knew everything about the areas we visited, facts and figures, dates and places. We did the optional trips too, and it gave us a good spread around the stunning scenery of Scotland. It certainly won't be our last trip with Shearings.

Comfortable hotel, but dated entertainment

Hotel has a nice location, comfortable lounges. The standard bedrooms are small and have paper thin walls, don't know if ugrading gives better sound proofing.Bring your own shower gel and shampoo, these are not provided.Driver as usual very helpful and knowledgable. The entertainment is dated and centres around highland flings etc, which is not to everybodys taste.whilst the majority of customers are retired folk in their 70s and 80s, it would be nice if the hotel catered for younger age groups, overall though if you want peace and quiet it's fine

A GREAT BREAK AWAY FROM THE BUSTLING CROWDS.

my grandaughter and i went to strathpeffer in february 2012. this was a surprise for me as that day was my 65th birthday. i did not know about it untill the day before. what a lovely place and so quiet.we live on a very busy dual track road , so it was heaven at night , i could actually sleep ! the staff could not have been nicer, the food was absolutely wonderfull and always HOT and freshly cooked .you had a good chioce too. my grandaughter is Autistic and she was the belle of the ball. the entertainment was so good too, had everyone laughing, and ronnie ross , the singer was perfect for the place.we were very sad to leave and would go back when finances allow.

A nice hotel only let down by the lack of a shower, not everyone can take a bath. The food and service were first class. The excursions were interesting and informative narrated by the driver.

Beautiful Area of Scotland

As my first expierence of a Shearing Holiday, I was ready to be critical, I however was blown away by the service provided, there were a couple of problems, see later. From pick up to the Hub the srevice is outstanding, luggage is handled efficiently, length of time at Normanton could be reduced. Trip to Scotland in the coach was no problem, the driver was knowledgable and entertaining. The Hotel is excellent and the location outstanding. Hotel Food was varied and well prepared, but it seems to be a race to get you out of the dining room as fast as possible, the evening meal was three courses, but was all served in less than 15 minutes which we were not impressed with, nothing we did seemed to be able to slow the service down. Entertainment in the evenings was good and varied. Trips out were a little tedious when drivers are forced to go to places that at the time of the year are not good stops. ie Who wants to spend and hour and a quarter in a small garden centre, The return journey was as efficient as the outward, however our driver returning us to the pick up point ran out of hours and had to try to adapt his route to minimise this, we therefore arrived at the pick up 1 hour later than expected as this was where the driver was staying for the weekend, he having varied the route back. All in all however this was a great holiday and I will be doing another later this year. Well done Shearings

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel, first visit was very good that is why we came back. However on this visit it was far to busy, had difficulty finding a seat to watch the cabaret and as we were all inclusive took ages to get a drink from the bar.You also need to do something about your coach feeder system it took over 4hours to get from Blackpool to Gretna which was nearly as long as it did to get to Straphpeffer which is nearly twice as far.Coming back was worse it took over 41/2 hours to get from Gretna to Blackpool with no comfort breaks on a coach with no working toilet.System needs looking into.
