Food and Drink

Wiener Schnitzel

As the country’s national dish, the Wiener Schnitzel is a must-try on any trip to Austria. This delicious meal consists of tender cutlets, coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and fried – and, according to Austrian law, the meat of the Wiener Schnitzel must be veal.

Viennese Apfelstrudel

The traditional Viennese pastry of apple strudel, or apfelstrudel, is best served in its home country alongside a Viennese coffee and topped with icing sugar. The recipe takes flaky strudel dough – along with key ingredients like the sliced apples, spices and hazelnuts – and makes an unforgettably delicious dessert.

Vienna Sausage

Discover these delicious sausages throughout the city of Vienna at the array of Würstelstande, or sausage booths. Try the käsekrainer sausage – filled with small chunks of cheese – or opt for the classic Frankfurter Würstchen.

Frittatensuppe

The simple but classic dish Frittatensuppe combines sliced pancakes, which can be made sweet with the addition of jam, with clear soup. Typically served with chives, this delicious broth dish is a favourite comfort food in Austria.

Salzburg

Salzburg Highlights

Musical Heritage

A music lover’s paradise, Salzburg is brimming with artistic heritage. Mozart was born here, and his birthplace – Hagenauer Haus – is one of the most-visited museums in Austria. Salzburg is also renowned for its connections with ‘The Sound of Music’ – the real Trapp family once lived here, and many set locations used in the musical can be found throughout the city.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Situated on the mighty Festungsberg, Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Europe. Forming an integral part of the city’s skyline, the fortress houses several museums showcasing everything from the lives of prince-archbishops, to weapons, uniforms and memorabilia from times of war and peace.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

Built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, Mirabell Palace and its gardens are one of Salzburg’s must-see sights. The Marble Hall in the palace is considered one of the world’s most beautiful wedding halls, and several important scenes from ‘The Sound of Music’ were shot in Mirabell Gardens.

Vienna

Vienna Highlights

Ringstrasse

The most famous boulevard in Vienna, the Ringstrasse is home to some of the city’s most iconic buildings. The Hofburg Palace, which serves as the workplace and home of Austria’s president, can be found here, with other highlights including the Opera House, National Theatre, and City Hall. There are many ways to soak up the sights of this street, including by foot, tram or coach.

Schönbrunn Palace

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most beautiful Baroque complexes in Europe. The gardens boast fountains, statues, monuments, flower displays, and the remarkable Gloriette, whilst the rooms inside the palace have been used by Emperor Franz Joseph, Mozart, Napoleon and many more notable figures.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

The symbol of Vienna, St. Stephen’s Cathedral is renowned for its intricately tiled roof and iconic spires. The north and south towers offer impressive views across the city, and the Pummerin – the largest bell in Austria – is also located in the north tower.

Austrian Tyrol

Austrian Tyrol Highlights

Innsbruck

The capital of the Austrian Tyrol, Innsbruck offers an enticing blend of natural beauty, history and culture. The Old Town charms visitors with its mix of architectural styles, unique shops, and significant sights such as the Stadtturm and the Golden Roof – a little balcony featuring a roof with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles.

Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel may be one the most famous and exclusive ski resorts in the world, but the town has much more to offer than just skiing. Surrounded by stunning Alpine scenery, the colourful medieval centre is brimming with high-end shops and chic cafés, and there are two beautiful churches to discover.

Lake Achensee

Known for its intense shades of blue and excellent water quality, Lake Achensee is the largest lake in the Tyrol. With five towns situated on the lake and the imposing beauty from the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, this lake is a true Tyrolean jewel.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt Highlights

Hallstatt Salt Mine

With a history spanning 7,000 years, Hallstatt boasts the oldest salt mine in the world. Excavations of the mine have uncovered some fascinating discoveries, including a completely preserved salt man found in 1734.

Hallstatt Skywalk

There’s no better way to admire the beauty of Hallstatt than by heading up the Hallstatt Skywalk. Standing 360 metres above the ground, this platform juts out into thin air and offers a remarkable panoramic view of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains.

Old Town

Built among the mountains, Hallstatt’s Old Town boasts traditional wooden chalets and views of the Hallstätter See – it really is like something straight out of a fairy tale. Be sure to visit the iconic photo spot known as ‘Photo View!’
