Holiday Details

Day 1: From home to Gretna
We travel to Gretna for our overnight stay at the Gretna Hall Hotel. (D)
Day 2: Gretna to Portrush via the Antrim Coast
It’s an early start as we sail with Stena Line from Cairnryan to Belfast on the SuperFast Ferry. Once on dry land we travel past the glens and dramatic cliffs of the Antrim Coast on our way to our holiday resort of Portrush. Here we settle for four nights at the Ramada Portrush Hotel – the perfect base from which to explore.
Day 3: Belfast
Today you are in for a treat as we travel to Belfast – a vibrant city with so much to see and do. Here you can spend your day at leisure; fabulous shops, the Edwardian City Hall and Queen;s University are just a few of the sights to see. We recommend you round off the day with a drink in the Crown Liquor Saloon – one of the city’s best. You may choose to enhance your time in Belfast by joining our optional guided city tour which will make sure you see the main sights. (B,D)
Day 4: Giant’s Causeway & Bushmills Railway
An exciting day is ahead as we venture out to the legendary Giant’s Causeway, where 40,000 symmetrical columns rise dramatically from the sea – this really is a spectacular sight to behold! As the story goes, the columns were built by the Irish giant Finn McCool so his Scottish lover could walk across the sea to be with him. But the adventure doesn’t stop there, we then join the recently renovated Bushmills Railway for a relaxing journey before returning to Portrush where you will have free time to explore this delightful resort.
Day 5: A day at leisure in Portrush
Now is your chance to explore the bustling resort of Portrush with its beautiful beaches. Portrush is one of Northern Ireland’s premier seaside resorts, and the oldest part of the town is built on a mile long peninsula, extending out into the sea. (B,D)
Day 6: Portrush to Dublin via Downpatrick
As we bid farewell to Portrush, we journey southwards to visit the fascinating St Patrick’s Centre in Downpatrick, to uncover the history of Ireland’s patron saint. It is here in the nearby Down Cathedral that the remains of Saint Patrick are said to lie. Our next stop is Dublin, which is where we’ll stay overnight in the St Stephen’s Green area at the lovely Camden Court Hotel, a pleasant stroll from the city centre. (B,D)
Day 7: Dublin to Caernarfon
Another great city is just waiting to be discovered – dazzling Dublin! You can spend the morning exploring the city at leisure or join us on an optional guided tour. Then in the afternoon we make our way to the port for our return ferry crossing back to Holyhead and on to Caernarfon where we stay overnight at the Celtic Royal Hotel. (B,D)
Day 8: Caernarfon to home
We depart this morning and make our way home. (B)

Very diverse and as busy or quiet as you like

Holiday August 2012 - this was my first Shearings holiday and I wasn't sure what to expect, though my mother had been with them before. It was very well organised; stress free changes throughout. All the hotels were good re accommodation and food. Some of the other passengers had grumblings about the bedrooms in the stop over hotels in Wales but Mum and me were very lucky and were in a refurbished room, though it was very small with little room for two suitcases. As we were worried about the weather (though we were very lucky and hardly had any of the forecast rain), we elected to go on the optional city tours of Derry, Belfast and Dublin. I would recommend these to everyone. You still get some time in the cities to 'do your own thing', but you would never get to see all we did. I would particularly recommend the Belfast tour. All in all a good holiday and it has tempted me to book with Shearings again next year !
