    Located in a peaceful area in Katwoude, on the outskirts of Volendam, the Van der Valk Hotel is an excellent place to stay, with an indoor pool and comfortable guest rooms. We’ll stay at this hotel during our time in Volendam, and we’ll enjoy two included excursions while on holiday.

    Our first will take us to Keukenhof Gardens, located in Lisse. One of the largest flower gardens in the whole world, Keukenhof is known for its tulips and other floral shows, and we’ll admire the beautiful displays during our day here.

    After this, we’ll enjoy time at leisure in Volendam, or we could join our optional excursion to discover Amsterdam. Our next included excursion will travel to the Ijsselmeer Villages of Marken and Edam, both featuring beautiful surroundings.

    In Marken, we’ll find traditional wooden houses and can learn more about the local folklore of the island while here, before we travel onwards to Edam, which is famous for producing the delicious Edam cheese. Edam boasts an interesting old town with a number of historical attractions to  explore.

    Full day: Keukenhof Gardens
    Admire the stunning floral displays at Keukenhof Gardens with seven themed gardens Keukenhof Gardens. Set in a park intersected by canals and lakes, the world's greatest flower show draws huge spring crowds to its lines of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. Stroll through a carpet of diverse colours and scents, admiring the handiwork of a dedicated team of horticulturalists.

    Full Day: Volendam, Marken and Edam

    The picturesque village of Volendam is one of the best known ports of the old Zuiderzee, and is a favourite Dutch resort. It is also famous for its association with famous artists such as Picasso and Renoir who were attracted to the area. Wander along the narrow alleyways which wind between the pretty gabled houses. Step back in time with a visit to a traditional cheese farm where you can gain an insight into cheese making and enjoy an included tasting.

    We then continue to explore the towns of Marken and Edam. Marken was once an island, but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway. The town is famed for its traditional wooden buildings, with many folklore stories being based around the town’s history. The traditional fishing town is incredibly quaint, and will provide us with opportunities to enjoy the scenery and to buy local souvenirs.

    Meanwhile, in Edam, we’ll find out more about the town that has become famous for the production of the cheese with which it shares its name. We’ll find many shops selling Edam cheese, and will also be able to find a lot of other shops selling handmade wares and interesting gifts for friends and family at home.

    Half Day: Edam and Marken
    The towns of Marken and Edam are located close to Volendam and are lovely places to visit. We’ll travel to these destinations on our final day in the village and will enjoy time in each to explore and find out more about the towns.

    Amsterdam Canal
    Amsterdam

    Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, is known for its pretty canals, which have seen it be referred to the ‘Venice of the north’ on numerous occasions. The city is filled with cultural highlights and historic attractions, and has retained much of its traditional charm and beauty throughout the years.

    We’ll spend an entire day in Amsterdam on this optional excursion, so we’ll be able to enjoy free time in the city to spend as we wish. We could visit some of the many sights, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, the Hermitage Amsterdam, the Anne Frank House or the Amsterdam Museum. Or, we could simply explore the city centre at random to enjoy the wonderful architecture and atmosphere of Amsterdam.

    During our time in Amsterdam, we’ll get the option of taking a scenic canal cruise, which will take us along one of the many canals in the city. This will allow us to see why Amsterdam’s canals are so popular, and will give us a chance to learn more about how and why they were built.
