The Catalan capital, Barcelona, is a fantastic city to explore at leisure, with its wonderful architecture and bustling atmosphere. Admire Antoni Gaudi’s incredible Modernist creations, including the as-yet-unfinished Sagrada Familia, and spend time shopping along the famous Las Ramblas boulevard. This mesmerising city is known for its excellent attractions as much for its delicious cuisine, so be sure to sample some of the local food during our time here.

Join us on our optional excursion to Montserrat, known locally as the ‘serrated mountain’. We travel through the mountains north of Barcelona to the site of the famous Benedictine monastery. In 1025 the Abbot of Ripoli and Bishop of Vic officially founded the Monastery of Montserrat, and today there are around one hundred monks who are based here. They follow the Order of St. Benedict and can be distinguished from other orders of Monks by their philosophy – “that there is an importance to everything that every person is”. Montserrat Monastery means different things to different people and this is all reflected in its attractions. For many pilgrims to Montserrat it is an entirely spiritual experience. However, if you are not a religious person you will still find that there is a great deal of interest at Montserrat Mountain and Monastery. The chapels, beautiful Basilica and turbulent history make it a fascinating place to visit.

Girona is one of Catalonia’s major cities, and our trip here will be spent at leisure, so we can discover this excellent location to our hearts' content. With lots of sights to enjoy, we’re sure to be kept busy during our visit! There are the ancient city walls and towers which mark the entrance to Girona’s Old Town, plus Girona Cathedral, dating from 1015. This cathedral is home to the world’s widest Gothic nave, although it isn’t the only prominent religious building in Girona – there’s also the Sant Pere de Galligants church, and the Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu.

Alternatively, why not join our optional excursion to Besalu? Besalu was an important town during the Middle Ages, with its territory extending as far as France and being designated a historic national property by the Spanish government in 1966. The town is particularly famous for its 12th-century bridge over the Fluvia River. It is a great place to wander through history with a number of buildings dating back almost 1,000 years, still laid out in their original street configuration.
