    En Route: Erfurt

We travel via Erfurt during our holiday, taking in this wonderful city’s excellent scenery. The geographical centre of modern Germany, Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia and is filled with stunning sights.

    Colditz Castle
En Route: Leipzig & Colditz Castle

While en route, we visit the beautiful city of Leipzig, home to the Nikolaikirche, the Church of St. Nicholas, which was the starting point of peaceful demonstrations against the communist regime which led to German Reunification.

During our time here, we also visit the infamous Colditz Castle, used as a workhouse and a mental institution for over 100 years; it gained international fame as a prisoner of war camp during World War II for Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps.

    En Route: Mohnesee Dam

En route to Dresden, we stop at the Mohne Dam, which was the largest in Europe after its four year construction was completed in 1913. Significant for the British military, the dams in this industrial region controlled the water level for a network of canals crucial to barge transport, which powered the steel plants and munitions factories of the German war machine. The dam was famously breached by RAF Lancaster Bombers, ‘The Dambusters’, with specially constructed bouncing bombs.

    Berlin Cathedral
Half Day: Berlin including city tour

We’ll introduce you to the main attractions of this vibrant city, on our interesting guided tour. As we explore cosmopolitan Berlin today, it’s hard to imagine that until 1989 this city was divided, as the communist government built a wall to separate West Berlin from the rest of East Germany, with the crossing point ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ to prevent escape to the West part of the city. See landmarks including remnants of the Berlin Wall, the impressive Reichstag Parliament, poignant Checkpoint Charlie and the magnificent Brandenburg Gate.
