  • Overview

Chard is a tranquil, picturesque town, situated close to the borders of Devon and Dorset, in South Somerset. The town is surrounded by stunningly beautiful countryside, making it a wonderful place to stay for relaxing British breaks. Take in the pretty scenery here, and take a stroll around the town centre to enjoy a spot of shopping, or why not explore the nearby area? Both Lyme Regis and the astonishing Jurassic Coast are just a short drive away, and many of our excellent Chard weekends away include excursions to these fantastic destinations.

Located 500 feet above sea level, Chard is the highest town in Somerset. This town has a long and vivid history, with one of its most important historical claims to fame being that it was the birthplace of powered flight. There’s a lot to see and do here, from admiring the pretty architecture in the town centre, to discovering the town’s many sights. These include the 11th-century Church of St Mary the Virgin and the Grade I listed buildings along Fore Street in Chard’s centre.

Chard enjoys a number of important sights, including Snowdon Hill Quarry. Situated near the outskirts of the town, this quarry is a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the unique and well-preserved fossils found there. The Chard Museum at Godworthy House is a must-visit on any holiday to Chard, offering a fascinating insight into the rich history and heritage of the area. Our Chard breaks offer the chance to explore more of the local area too - why not take a look at our Somerset holidays now?
