Visiting a special event during your holiday is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture of your holiday destination.
Each year hundreds of events and festivals take place all over the UK and abroad, from huge events that attract hundreds of thousands of people to smaller, specialised events. You could choose a holiday specifically to see an event, or you might decide where you want to go and then choose your departure date based on an event you'd like to see in the area.
And it's a popular misconception that festivals and other similar events only happen in summer. You can find fun things to see at almost any time of the year! Have a look at our favourite events of 2013...
The Rhine in Flames is a series of spectacular firework shows which happens on five different dates between May and September. Thousands of people flock to the river Rhine to watch the show either from the banks or from the convoy of ships on the river. There's fantastic Medieval scenery to behold along the Rhine and the fantastic acoustics mean that this is a firework event like no other. If you're considering a Rhine cruise, timing it so that you'll see the Rhine in Flames is recommended.
2013 marks the 100th birthday of Verona's Opera Festival and the celebrations will last from 14th June to 7th September. The 2000 year old Arena di Verona ampitheatre holds 15,000 people and is the perfect place to hear the finest opera in the world. Not confined to the ancient arena, the festival also spills out onto Verona's squares, theatres and museums. Selected holidays to Italy have optional excursions to the Verona Opera during the festival.

While other seaside resorts are winding down at the end of summer, Blackpool comes alive with its dazzling display of over a million lightbulbs. The illuminations begin on the 30th of August this year and will remain lit until the 3rd of November. Stretching over 6 miles along the seafront of Blackpool, the illuminations are a wonder to behold, and well worth a visit.
