cheap all inc break

The drivers were very professional and worked well as a team.Paul was very knowledgeable not only about Italy but France and Switzerland too and his commentaries really made the outings enjoyable. The hotel was clean and the room and ensuite small but ok.The food plentiful, not always hot.The packed lunches lacked imagination and the rolls were often stale. The downstairs bar where all inc drinks were served lacked any ambience, entertainment, man on an organ..awful...average age group on the hol 65

Just returned from

We have just returned from our holiday. LOVED IT!Hotel stunning looks 5 star. Beautifully decorated. Spotlessly clean. On arrival, offered a room upgrade for 30 euros and were given a deluxe balcony and lake view room right at the front of the hotel with stunning views across the lake. Well worth the 30 euros. Food fabulous, free drinks included, Our drivers Darryl and Dave - absolutely superb, the best. This was our first Shearings holiday and it won't be the last. Highly recommened.

just got back from como what a fantastic holiday. hotel spot on staff brilliant, food good. didnt book a lake view but got one anyway.dont miss the railway trip, its well worth the extra money, milan not up to much but it was pouring with rain when we went, so that spoiled it. shearings drivers have very good knowledge of the area and a good sense of fun. would go back again.

Good holiday at the price

Just returned from another lovely holiday by overnight coach this time to Lake Como. Journey not too bad and having done Salou back end of last year it felt shorter.Adequate stops en route. Drivers Paul and Bob were great very professional and particularly Paul was a fountain of knowledge of the local areas which we covered. Lots of good tips which made the holiday even more enjoyable. Hotel Britannia at Cadenabbia was fine with the exception of the booking in on arrival. Despite a phone call to warn of pending arrival, we were kept waiting from breakfast time to early afternoon to get into our rooms. Several on the trip were issued keys for their room to find their rooms had not been prepared when they got in.This is one area that Shearings and the hotel must sort out as first impressions count for a lot in the leisure industry. Room was comfortable with good views over the lake. The buffet style food was good and the staff particularly Ricardo at the desk were very helpful.Position of hotel was lovely with good walks in the vicinity, the green walk along the promenade and the walk up the mountain behind the hotel to San Martino church are to be recommended. (the church being about an hour plus to the top where the views are stunning) Good walking shoes are required but well worth it. Also a short bus trip into Argegno and a trip up the” hidden” cable car into a mountain village called Priga ,results in again wonderful views and a little cafe which was the only place we found up there, the owner is most welcoming and speaks good English. The trips out were fine and thanks to the guys good efforts in getting the coach going again after a breakdown on day one we completed all of them. As with every other report we have read the Bernina railway is the star. Up to St Moritz the views are stunning and this trip should not be missed. The market at Como was poor. Having seen Spanish markets recently this did not compare and hopefully this will improve as the season goes on. Lugano trip was ok. The run all round the lake Como was lovely. Milan interesting very busy and expensive watch the African salesman who are all over the place and a tip is to sample the gelato here best we have had. Duomo spectacular, be warned you need to pay to take photographs in the interior. The boat advertised from the hotel to Bellagio does not start until Easter but you could get a ferry further down the promenade but we made this town on the boat trip at the end of the week and it is beautiful a must to see. It is like stepping back in time. Old Italy!!All in all a very good holiday with great credit to the Shearings staff on the coach who made it all the more enjoyable. The Italian people that we met and spoke to were lovely we have travelled to various parts of this country and have always found it the same. Overall a holiday to be recommended.

Good value

The overnight travelling wasn't very comfortable as very crushed and no leg room, plenty of comfort stops though.Arrived at the Hotel just in time for breakfast which we paid for, then it was a matter of waiting around for our rooms to be made ready, we enjoyed sitting by the lake in the sunshine. We couldn't fault the hotel extremely good value, only complaint there are no tea & coffee facilities in the room. The ferry was not running which was dissapointing.Kenny & Glyn were excellent drivers, but not very knowledgable very laid back come day go day.

Excellent value without compromising on the quality

This is the third Shearings holiday my wife & I have been on in the last 12 months & even though we were totally satisfied with the other two, this was, by far the best. Both the drivers Jason & Valdec were excellent & tried very hard to ensure every one was comfortable & had no problems. The hotel was 1st class & even though the meals were buffet style, everything seemed to progress very smoothly & you could spend as long or short a time as you wanted to.The room we had was excellent & the resort itself, while being fairly small, provided good lakeside walks in both directions & plenty of opportunities to explore for the more adventurous. All the trips were good, but the Bernina Express tour was our favourite, followed closely by the day trip to Milan (shame about the weather ).Overall we couldn't fault anything over the 7 days spent in resort or the 2 days travelling there & back. Drew & Chris.

Great Holiday, Great People

Have just arrived back from this holiday, very tired as did not get on with the overnight travelling, not enough leg room as coach was not a grand tourer like last year when we went. Had a fabulous time, the hotel was good value & the food yummy. We arrived early Sunday morning at 8,10am & had to wait for our rooms until past 12.15pm, it would have been better if we had somewhere to put our luggage, then we could have gone for a walk to freshen & wake up. Coming back was better because the drivers let us put our luggage on early so we had the rest of the day to yourselves & we went exploring the local village as it was a nice day.Our drivers Kenny & Glynn were great fun & very helpful, gave us a lot of information about the area & excellent drivers. So would recommended this holiday to my friends & will be certainly booking next year, perhaps try another Italian holiday as there are many to choose from. So well done Shearings keep giving us good value holidays. Please note there is no tea & coffee making facilities in the rooms, even with upgrades.

1st time I have been away with shearings but I will be booking more

Just returned from a trip to lake como staying at the brittania hotel and I must say I was well impressed. I wasnt looking forward to the long drive to get there but must say it was not as bad as i expected we travelled through the night but had lots of comfort stops so had the change to stretch our legs. The drivers provided us with drinks which helped. The hotel was lovely the staff friendly and helpful. We upgraded to a room over looking the lake with balcony on arrival for an extra 40 euros well worth it.I would just like to say a big thank you to Paul and Bob our drivers for the support and help they gave me and my daughter on this holiday.ps do not miss the trip on the bernina express the views are amazing

my wife and i got back from como last week. we could not believe what we got for our, money the hotel was more like a 4 star than a 3. food was great, rooms fantastic, excursions out of this world including the train journey up the alps a ounce in a life time experience.its a long trip down on the coach but you get to know the people and form a bond.we had some great characters on board including trev from previous review we sat in front of him on the coach and he had some great stories. our 2 drivers jason and stewart where 1st class and made the holiday.their knowledge of the area was 2nd to none. we met a great couple who we spent the evenings in the bar with and a scotts man who introduced us to a local drink called grappa (be carefull) its lethal. FANTASTIC

Excellent all round

I felt privileged to stay at this hotel, the best of many I have used with Shearings. The ambience, decor, furnishings, food and visits were all outstanding.Unfortunately, my pleasure was spoilt somewhat by the serious lack of heating and lighting in my bedroom, 208.I complained each day but despite efforts from staff and other holiday makers conditions remained bad to the last. I was permanently cold and caught a bad cold, which I still have. The bar area was none too inviting ( as I already knew) and again I found it uncomfortably cool.A pity about these last points as in all other respects this was a superb value for money holiday and one I will repeat, possibly very soon, but not in 208.

Excellent Holiday provided by Shearings

Went to Lake Como 9/2/13 with Shearings for the Venice Carnival and Milan, optional excursions which were recommended and provided for extra money included St Moritz (Switzerland), Laguno (Switzerland), Como Town and cruise on the lake. The only factor in going in winter months is there is a lottery with the weather and may be not much to do if there is any poor rain (could do with some board games & magazines available at Hotel) and wish Shearings would provide option of crossing the channel by Euro-tunnel as it is possible that crossing could be rough in the winter months.Food and hotel staff was excellent, free-wi fi, bar, etc, double rooms over looking the lakes are a must and single rooms although comfortable and clean are tad a bit small and also word of warning that there are transparent curtains in bathroom so people can look in the day time. TV with German and English channels are available but poor reception. There are some good walks from the hotel to the two nearby villages but further than this it is advisable to catch a bus as there are no walkways.Have to commend the excellent service and professionalism showed by our two coach drivers who not only drove extremely well but looked after us no problem was any trouble for them. Also in recent years the Venice Carnival has cut back on its attractions due to Euro recession but still good trip for 3 hours and nice train ride from Verona to Venice, with excellent guide provided for Venice and Milan excursions. There are quite few people in Carnival masks and it is good to mingle with them and soak up the atmosphere of the Carnival.Hopefully for 2014+ Shearings could provide an option for couple of days stay at Venice so there is more time at Venice and also find more time for attractions, e.g., Museums, Carnival Events and Night time events / shows

Tiring journey but well worth it.

Just returned from wonderful holiday on Lake Como. The hotel far exceeded my expectations having read some of the less complimentary reviews. The food was plentiful and varied and catered for all tastes. All the excursions were enjoyable. Do not miss the Bernina Express. The only warning about the extra excursions is that it is best to pay in sterling as the euro exchange rate that is used is the buy back rate so not a good deal. Also be warned that Shearings does not accept payment for these by card so make sure you have cash to hand. Our drivers, Ken and David, were cheerful, efficient and very knowledgeable about the area. We were very lucky with the weather. Never a cloud in the sky. The road on all our trips were relatively quiet but I should imagine that this trip in the height of summer would not be so enjoyable. Well worth the upgrade to a lake view room. Cheaper to do this at the hotel than through Shearings.

Lake Como with St Morritz

We booked this holiday because we were attracted to the included excursion of St Morritz with the Bernina Express. Although it was a long journey on the coach the frequent stopover helps. The drivers had been very helpful and charming, and we also find the hotel Britannia very comfortable and clean and the staff had also been very friendly and helpful. We asked for an upgrade and the view of Lake Como from the balcony was stunning. I find the trip to St Morritz most memorable, with spectacular sceneries on the Bernina Express. When the photos taken from this journey were uploaded on to Facebook, there were many favourable comments. The other included excursions to Milan and Como markets were interesting, offering different cultural insights of Italy. We had a jam-packed holiday as we joined all the optional excursions offered. We will definitely join Shearings again as we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and find their service 1st class.

Beautiful break on Lake Como

I travelled for the first time with Shearings as a solo passenger and thoroughly enjoyed the company of my fellow travellers and the drivers, Rob and Valdek, were so accommodating, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the areas that we passed through on our way to Lake Como and the excursions that we took advantage of. The hotel and the food were splendid and the bedrooms had everything including a fridge and a safe. This is one trip I'm sure I will try again and stay longer. There is so much more to enjoy on beautiful Lake Como.

Would definitely return -one of the best holidays ever.

Having read widely differering reviews I did wonder before travelling how this holiday would be . In the event it was excellent.Steve and Waldez were excellent drivers , everyone at Britannia Excelsior work very hard and given how busy it is it is very efficient . The food was delicious, plentiful and hot , yes the dining room was busy at times and might not suit some looking for quiet and table service but it was great by me.It exceeds its 3 star rating , it's a beautiful building and the room we had was excellent , clean, fresh towels, amazing view, comfy bed lots of space, english tv if you wanted it air con and fan -I was delighted with everything about the hotel . Ok so you had to queue for drinks but maybe not such a bad thing as the drink flowed very freely and any more of it and some guests might have been very wobbly !If you really can't cope with hectic this hotel may not be for you but you will always find a quiet spot so give it a try and you will be very pleasantly surprised. The lido area is an added bonus especially watching that magical sunset.I would fly next time as the coach journey was a bit too much for me but not as bad as I had expected and the stops and the scenery make it worth at least trying once. Bernini express was the best trip I have ever been on. Maggiore was splendid too. Milan ok when we got to the Duomo but sorry tours round cemetries just weren't my idea of fun would rather have had longer at the Duomo or even the shopping .If you are trying to make up your mind about this after reading mixed (in my opinion, unfair) reviews of the hotel I would recommend it without hesitation.A huge thank you to all at Britannia Excelsior for a wonderful value for money relaxing holiday. I hope Shearings give them credit for all their hard work.

This is a wonderful peaceful area of Italy

We go to lake Como 2-3 times a year as we love the tranquility and climate.Britannia hotel has improved immensely over the last few years. (I remember the reviews calling it Faulty Towers.)We always upgrade our room with lake view and balcony as the view across the lake is spectacular, these rooms are well furnished and comfortable. The dining room can be a free for all as the hotel is almost always fully booked. If you want Italian food you will be disappointed they cater for English and German palates with pasta and pizza included in the evening mealsbh, always plenty of Italian ice cream though.

Standards Dropping

4th time to this hotel with Shearings. Good driver who got us to hotel for breakfast. We paid extra for breakfast and lunch on first day and evening meal on departure day but good value and much better than the usual stop at expensive Swiss services. Upgraded to balcony and lake view room which was excellent but food and drink at hotel not as good as on previous visits. Stomach problems for part of week, which could have been just me but others also suffered. Red wine standard much worse and I could not drink it on this trip and Rose wine no longer available in the bar. Fantastic location but room quality can vary at the hotel and they need to watch that food and drink quality does not continue to fall.

Excellent value, perfect location, would highly recommend.

Very efficient service from booking to return.Great drivers, marvellous scenery on the journey the further south we travelled.Plenty of comfort breaks during the journey.Hotel in perfect position, with beautiful views from the terrace over the lake to Bellagio. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The restaurant served freshly prepared dishes with plenty of choice.Drinks hot and cold, alcoholic and non alcoholic were available throughout the day and evening. The reception desk was helpful, with very good English spoken. The included trips were excellent, and the Bernina Express was something not to be missed. The lido, with its swimming pool, pebbly beach area and terraces was just a short walk across the road, here you could get most drinks (not spirits) all day, plenty of good quality sunbeds. All in all we thought it a great holiday. (The only negative is the bar area, which is rather dim).

Holiday in Como

Hotel clean and comfortable, room overlooking lake, food on the whole good, but not always piping hot, bar in basement of building thus no windows and not a place where we chose to drink, even though drinks were free. Could not fault the coach drivers, who tried to make a very long journey less tedious with their good humour and banter. The excursions were good value for money. We would not go again as the coach trip was very long, but would recommend this holiday if hours spent on the road held no terrors.
