This magical tour takes in some of the most picturesque scenery of Bavaria and the Tyrol. The small Austrian village of Lechaschau, just over the border from Bavaria, is a great location for visiting the fairytale castles of ‘Mad’ King Ludwig.

Included Excursions

Neuschwanstein & Linderhof: A wonderful trip today as we visit Neuschwanstein - the ultimate fairytale castle and Germany’s most famous attractions. Neuschwanstein Castle, which was built by "mad" King Ludwig II and is known as "The Castle of the Fairy-tale King". Situated on a rugged hill against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery, it has appeared in several movies, was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disney and attracts more than 1.3 million visitors a year. We then continue to Linderhof Castle for our second visit. Known among the locals as the "Wedding Cake" the palace of Linderhof is a minor replica of Louis the XIV's in Versailles. This is the only one of Ludwig’s castles which was actually completed and was built as the King’s private retreat.

Munich: We visit Munich, the capital of Bavaria, a friendly city of great elegance and charm, with an idyllic location at the foot of the Alps. The city boasts grandiose palaces from Bavaria’s era as an independent kingdom, and is a delight to explore. Be sure to see the Marienplatz, the Town Hall and the "Frauenkirche" Cathedral or maybe you could enjoy a visit to one of the many beer halls.

Nymphemburg Palace: Enjoy an optional visit to Nymphemburg Palace, also known as Nymph's Castle. This Baroque palace was the summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria and weas built in 1675.

Chiemsee: Join us on a full day optional excursion to Chiemsee, a fresh water lake that is often called the Bavarian Sea. There are two main islands on the lake, Herrenchiemsee with a genuine fairytale castle built by King Ludwig II and Frauchenchiemsee with a benedictine nunnery where the nuns make a local liquer called "Klosterlikor" and very good marzipan.

Lindau & Lake Constance: Join a full day optional excursion to Lindau and Lake Constance. Lake Constance is a 538sq km basin between the Alps and the Jura mountains. Three countries share the lake: Germany, Austria andSwitzerland, with 236 rivers and streams feeding into it. We visit Lindau the historical island linked to the main-land by a bridge. The harbour was finally completed in 1856, today it is still considered to be the most attractive sight on the whole of the lake.

Holiday Details

Day 1: UK to Belgium
We start our holiday with our journey to Dover for a ferry crossing to Calais. Then onward to Leige for our overnight stay.

Day 2: Belgium to Lechaschau
This morning we depart for our onward journey to Lechaschau where we will spend the next six nights.

Days 3 to 7:
At leisure in Lechaschau, with two included excursions

Day 8: Lechaschau to Belgium
Unfortunately today we have to say goodbye to Lechaschau and travel to Leige for our overnight stay.

Day 9: Belgium to UK
We continue our journey to Calais for our ferry crossing back to Dover and home, with some wonderful memories to share!
