Ideally located to enjoy the best of Bavarian and Tyrolean countryside, the small village of Lechaschau is just over the border from Bavaria and at the gates of the Austrian Tyrol. The fairy-tale castles of Bavarian 'Mad' King Ludwig are only a short drive away.

Included Excursions

Neuschwanstein Castle & Fussen: Today we head off on our included full day tour taking in Neuschwanstein Castle, which was built by "mad" King Ludwig II and is known as 'The Castle of the Fairy-tale King'. Situated on a rugged hill against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery it has appeared in several movies, was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disney and attracts more the 1.3 million visitors a year. Then onto Fussen which is situated at the southern end of the Romantic Road.

Linderhof Castle & Oberammergau: This morning we venture out to Linderhof Castle, known among the locals as the "Wedding Cake". The palace of Linderhof is a minor 'replica' of Louis XIV's Versailles. This afternoon we head to Oberammergau, nestling amid the meadows of the Ammertal and world-famous for its 'passion plays'. It is equally noted for its gailly painted 18th century houses, whose facades combine motifs with clever trompe-l'oeil architectural effects creating the impression of a series of sketches.

Optional Excursions

Lake Constance and Lindau: Join us on our optional excursion to Lake Constance and Lindau. Lake Constance is a 538sq km basin between the Alps and the Jura mountains. Three countries share the lake: Germany, Austria and Switzerland with 236 rivers and streams feeding into it. We visit Lindau the historical island linked to the mainland by a bridge. The harbour, finally completed in 1856, is today still considered to be the most attractive on the whole of Lake Constance.

Innsbruck and Vipiteno: Innsbruck is a charming city and the capital of the Tyrol, surrounded by the high alps. It has plenty of charm with impressive artitecture including the famous Golden Roof, together with a wide choice of shops and restaurants in the quaint "getriedegasse" street. Then onto Vipiteno, and a glimpse of Italy in this small town just over the Austrian border.

Holiday Details

Day 1 UK to Belgium

We travel to Dover for the sailing to Calais, then on across Belgium for our overnight stay.

Day 2 Belgium to Lechaschau

Southwards through Germany and into Austria, arriving in Lechaschau in time for dinner. (B,D)

Days 3 to 7 Lechaschau

At leisure in Lechaschau, perfectly situated for visiting the fairy-tale castles of King Ludwig, Bavaria's famous son. Enjoy the highlights of this lovely part of Austria and neighbouring Germany on our included excursions. (B,D)

Day 8 Lechaschau to Belgium

Bidding farewell to Lechaschau, we depart for Belgium and our overnight hotel. (B,D)

Day 9 Belgium to UK

After breakfast we make our way to Calais for the sailing to Dover and home. (B)
