Did You Know?
The original croissant was Austrian. The kipferl, a crescent-shaped bread, has been baked in Austria since the Middle Ages. It gave rise to its more famous French cousin after an Austrian named August Zang opened a bakery in Paris in the late 1830s.
The German name for Austria, Österreich, means “Eastern Empire”. It refers to a time when Austria was part of the Holy Roman Empire.
Climate
Austria has a typical central European climate, with colder conditions in Alpine regions, where the peaks are snow-capped year round. In summer, days are hot, but nights can be cool. Winters are cold everywhere. In the Danube Valley, snow may stay on the ground for several weeks in winter. In southeastern Austria, including Carinthia, summers can be warmer and sunnier than north of the Alps, with a hint of a Mediterranean feel during settled periods.
Vienna sees average daily temperatures of -1ºC in January and 20ºC in July. Innsbruck in the Tyrol experiences average daily temperatures of -3ºC in January and 19ºC in July.
