Whitby and hotel good, excursions and entertainment not so good

Whitby town and Abbey great places to visit and the hotel and staff were very good. The excursion to Scarborough did not include tha promenade area which was very disappointing, and the hotel entertainment was pretty forgetable. However overall a very good holiday break.

on the whole good value for money

enjoyed this holiday, especially the dancing. We had a smashing room and the staff were very helpful. Whitby is a lovely place. My only gripe is that my husband is disabled and the lift was out of action most of the time.

Great Location!

We have stayed at this hotel several times, as we come to visit family in the area. We love the building, inside and out, the service is always excellent and the food good, with choices. The evening entertainment is great and the driver is usually friendly and happy.....even though we don't go on the excursions. We'll certainly be staying again.

Whitby Fun and Games

Loved the location, meals were excellent, and the entertainment was first class. Only down side was the lift not working the whole of the week which was quite inconvenient. Will be going again next winter. The coach driver was very informative on the trips, and pleasant.

Good all roun

We spent five days four nights at this hotel. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Foos very good as was the rooms. Excursions bar one were good. We paid extra to go to a market in a small village. There were about 6 stalls and nothing about the place was good. Apart from that the holiday was very good

Great short break - Excellent value for money

Hotel a bit tired but cosy, and staff were helpful & friendly. Unfortunately the lift was out of order all the time we were there. Excellent food, service, excursions & entertainment - Darren the Host was great. We have been many times before, one reason being to dance. However, the Comedian, although very good, occupied the whole dance floor trying to sell his CDs for 45 minutes after his act had finished, which prevented our last dancing session which was scheduled for after his performance. He should have occupied a corner of the room, as all others with CDs to sell do, not the whole floor.

Good Little Break

Hotel was comfortable but lift didnt work. My husband and I where ok but a little tough on less moble residents! The compere for the entertainment was very slick but a little outdated stuck in 1960s.The food and service very good. The only thing which was annoying was all inclusive was changed to 4 drinks a night at the last minute.

Good value for money.

We went to Whitby in March and thoroughly enjoyed this Shearings holiday. Our coach driver was excellent with very good knowledge of the area and looked after everyone very well. The hotel was a bit tired and in need of renovation but clean and comfortable. The nightly entertainment was excellent. Food good too. Whitby itself is a lovely place with nice walks but quite hilly so might not be suitable for the less mobile. All in all a very good 5 days made even more enjoyable by dry and sunny weather.

Very enjoyable

We enjoyed the holiday very much, We had a large seaview room, with a double bed and two singles. We were lucky that we were able to sleep in the 2 single beds as the double mattress dipped badly both sides and in my opinion needed replacing. if it hadn't been for the availability of the single beds we would have had cause for complaint and would have spoilt the holiday.Food and service very good although the dining room was very cosy. The excursions were good and the driver very obliging.Cannot comment on the evening entertainment as we contented ourselves by sitting in the lounge and talking to fellow guests.

A great short break in a lovely place

Very enjoyable Monday to Friday break. We had sea view so when we opened the curtains in the morning we could see the sun rising behind the old abbey ruins on the other side of the river - stunning! Good hotel, food and entertainment. The only negative thing was that we arrived late and therefore wasted some of our drinks for the first night. It would be better if those arriving late could carry the first set over to the second day. But that is not to detract from the enjoyment and value of this holiday. I would definitely go again.

Hotel in a great position for walking. The royal is a nice hotel clean and comfortable. The entertainment was very good and the quiz every night before the entertainment kept you occupied. Typicle Shearings food could be warmer and a better selection but on the whole well worth a visit. Will go again.

We woupld recommend this holiday to everyone.

The hotel is easily reached and gave us the afternoon to ourselves in the resort. The hotel is in a good position and all amenities were good, the food was varied enjoyable and the staff could not be faulted. The trips out were to the right places and gave us plenty of time to see what we wished. This was probably the best Shearings trip we have had but this may be influenced by the relatively short travelling time. The later start back was also appreciated.

A great area to visit

We visited in February, though the weather was mixed and a bit cold the hotel was warm and welcoming. We had booked a sea view which was well worth the money as our room was at the front facing the harbour and abbey the sunrise was amazing. The food was varied though the veg. could had been better, ie use fresh not frozen, the service excellent. The evening entertainment was ok, the compare very good and funny. Whitby itself is a lovely town well worth visiting. The included excursions were acceptable but a bit boring as the driver had not been there before and therefore had no knowledge of the area. Overall a good time had by all and I would recommend this hotel for a good short break.
