About Windermere Hotel

Windermere has been called the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’. With mountains, moors, lakes and tarns it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the splendour of the English countryside, right in the heart of the Lake District.

The Windermere Hotel occupies an excellent location at the head of the village of Windermere itself. Built from traditional Lakeland slate, our hotel is listed by English Heritage, and is one of the oldest hotels in Windermere having opened back in 1847 to coincide with the construction of the local railway.

The hotel’s location is ideal for exploring the local villages of Bowness and Windermere, as well as the beautiful Lake District scenery. Details of a selection of attractions in Windermere and the surrounding area can be found in the Local Attractions section of our website.

Spanning three floors, the Windermere Hotel contains 69 comfortable bedrooms. If you’re looking for that extra special touch, you can choose to upgrade to our stylish new Premier and Superior Rooms. Inside the hotel you’ll find a warm, intimate atmosphere, and the friendliest of welcomes from our highly experienced staff.

This hotel has a car park with a limited amount of priority spaces, these can be reserved at £5.00 per day

Windermere Hotel Premier Room

Often our most luxurious room option. Most premier rooms have four-poster beds and spacious en suite bathrooms that have been beautifully re-fitted to accommodate both bath and shower options. These large rooms will normally offer a comfortable seating area, 32 inch flat screen digital television, hairdryer and the facilities to make a hot beverage.

Very enjoyable

Had a lovely 5 day break 15 to 19 April at the Windermere hotel. It was central for everything. We got the train only 2 hours from Piccadilly Manchester. It was 5 minutes from hotel little hill. We were greeted by friendly and polite staff. Our room was 222 it was lovely and comfy bed the view from the room was excellent. It was nice and clean. The food was lovely and different choices. Breakfast was lovely too served by lovely waiter called Romman front of house was smiley Elaine great time we had

We had a lovely 5 day break at the Windermere hotel

It was in great location for trains buses shops etc and nice walk down to lake for boat trips. Could not fault the hotel Windermere from arriving the staff were welcoming and polite. It was lovely and clean at reception we were early as we got the train only 2 hrs it was 5 mins away. Left are luggage at reception so we had walk round. Even a Lakeland shop next to station and booths supermarket. Check in at 3 are room was 222 it was lovely scenery was lovely from front window. Evening meal was great to Elaine who showed to our seats was always very jolly and the waiter Romman was great at his job nothing to much trouble. Lovely comfy bed and breakfast was nice to. Could not fault the pleasant staff. Nice place for drink was just down road. Elleray also the spinnery restaurant brentfell rd bowness-on-Windermere was nice welcoming. We had lovely time and would defiantly stay at the Windermere hotel :)

Nice Break

Hotel convenient for the town centre. Bus and railway station opposite the hotel. Staff very efficient. Good choice of menu, good waiter service. Excellent breakfasts. Staff friendly and helpful. The coach tours were a nice bonus too. Look forward to the next time.

Four nights stay

Excellent Midweek Bonus Break

The Windermere Hotel is now my favourite Shearings Hotel. I was particularly impressed by our clean, comfortable Superior front facing bedroom. The hotel was in a perfect location being near the bus stop, railway station, info centre and shops all the way down to Bowness-on-Windermere. The hotel adjoins the uphill pathway to Orrest Head for beautiful views of the Lake on a clear day. The friendly staff were well groomed, polite, helpful & attentive. Thanks for a memorable holiday!

Brilliant Weekend

It was the first time we have been on a Shearings coach holiday and we are very impressed, had a wonderful stay in the Windermere hotel, everything was excellent, the room, staff and food we cannot fault anything thank you, we will certainly be using shearing holidays again.

Excelent Stay

Having not been on a coach holiday for many years, we booked this tour with some trepidation. We need not have worried. We travelled with friends and we all had an excellent time. The weather was wonderful, which was totally unexpected. The rooms we were initially allocated were on the ground floor at the rear and were very cramped and dark. We upgraded to rooms with a view over the town and the lake. These were very good. Food excellent, staff excellent and tours excellent. Well done Shearings.

Excellent Weekend

Just returned from a weekend at the Windermere Hotel. Overview is that it's fabulous value for money. Specifics: - room was clean, warm and comfortable. Public areas were warm and comfortable too. Staff throughout were friendly and helpful. Dining Room is lovely and the food was of a high standard (I had good choices for my GF diet). A most enjoyable weekend.

Three of us

Hotel clean rooms fine. Food excellent but you need magnifying class to read menu, staff very good but tend to rush you at meal times it felt like it was a race to feed you and get you out. That’s said staff were good. Entertainment was poor and only 3 nights of the week could have done with more as at night very little to do at night. The bar was on the small side and tended to be bit crowed but all in all worth a visit.

Time of our lives

We have just returned from a lovely stay at the Windermere Hotel. Thank you for everyone who made our stay so fantastic. The hotel is in a great location and here is loads to do in the surrounding area. The hotel itself with communal areas very popular and busy. The menu was varied with lots of choices and we were full to burst every night!! Special mention to the staff that were so friendly and helpful and gave us lots of advice about the local area. can't wait to come back!!

Perfect

Should Visit

Just returned from a 3 night stay at the Windermere Hotel. We had a brilliant room with a view over Windermere and on a good day you could see the lake (204). The room was clean and had full bathroom spotless. The food was of high standard and a good choice to. The staff were excellent and were there for any questions or problems that you had. Well done Shearings.......

Quality In Abundance

Very Clean & spacious hotel & nothing was a problem for the staff who I have to say are a credit to the hotel. We had a 3 week old baby & hotel provided us with a cot & reserved table for breakfast & evening meals which made life so much easier with the pram. Food was lovely with loads of choices & served with a smile & we even had a free cup of coffee after wards while watching the live entertainment Had an excellent lake view on ground floor Highly recommend & will return in Summer.

Must Visit

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday, we have just returned from a 5-day stay, our room had a wonderful view, was spacious, very modern, clean and comfortable. The food was excellent, and menu very different and upmarket to some of Shearings hotels. The staff was fantastic. If you had a problem they sorted with no bother. I want to go again in the summer. Odd Fellows on Tour

Just returned after an enjoyable weekend walking with a group of thirteen friends. Our room (223) was clean, but shabby in need of redecoration. The staff were excellent attentive and courteous. Food was excellent and varied.
