About Valley of Rocks Hotel

Ragged Jack, Devil's Cheesewring and Castle Rock are a selection of strange rock formations which form the Valley of the Rocks after which our hotel in Lynton is named. The valley is a pleasant walk from the hotel in Lynton which is perched high on the cliff top above the fishing village of Lynmouth. The hotel is situated on the main street, commanding panoramic views of the bay from its sloping gardens. Named ‘Little Switzerland of England’ by the Victorians, the lovely cliff top village of Lynton is Devon at its very best! Abundant in Victorian architecture, art and craft shops and quaint tearooms, it boasts magnificent views of the dramatic coastline.

This hotel only has a limited amount of parking spaces, these can be reserved at £5.00 per day. Passes for the nearby public car park are also available from the hotel reception, charges apply.

Lovely break in a wonderland setting!

Just had a wonderful time in Lynton and Lynmouth staying at Valley of Rocks Hotel. Hotel a little tired but nevertheless clean and comfortable room. Food very good and our waiter Ales was excellent!! He was happy, cheerful, attentive and quick, he really made for the most happy dining experience!! Cannot say the same however for the blonde lady who served in the bar area, she was very rude and impolite, and other couples also commented on her attitude. All in all a good value short break!

The best Christmas break

Self-drive in that terrible weather on the Monday 23rd. arrived at the Hotel just before 3.00pm. Warm welcome from the staff. The room No 9 was excellent including the bathroom. The meals was excellent, more than enough for us both, the serving staff deserve a big thank you, and they never stopped rushing around to serve you, especially Eric! Great entertainment every night, singing away with the acts on stage, I can see that parts of the Hotel needs up dating with new ideals on décor!! Give a call.

Lovely Hotel / Beautiful Area

Lovely friendly hotel. My room needed some TLC, but it certainly did not detract from the ambience of the hotel. The Waiting Staff deserve a special mention for the friendliness and efficiency. The food was excellent and the room clean. Great entertainment also. Lynton and Lynmouth are absolutely beautiful, also surrounding areas. Great holiday. Will be returning. The Coach Driver was also excellent. Well done Shearings.

Charming Hotel / Enchanting Area

This Hotel break was our 3rd in two months at 3 different Bay Hotels, each has their own unique charm, this wonderful old building needs a lick of paint in some areas (maybe instead of the entertainment?) but our room upgrade felt as though we were the first to stay in this beautifully refurbished sea view room (17) with a very good quality bed and fabrics throughout. The food as usual could not be faulted nor the staff they are all very accommodating...you could almost be anywhere in the world!

Good - but room for improvement

We wouldn't have been to this hotel five times unless it had something going for it. Good staff, good food, quick service and good value low season unless you want a glimpse of the sea! It could do with a lick of paint and its windows cleaned more often. It's stretching it a bit for the hotel to claim that it commands 'panoramic views from its sloping gardens.' It would have if only it cut those trees! There's much that could be done to improve the hotel garden.

Hotel with Beautiful Views

Lynton hilly but lovely walks and views. Nice hotel, imposing entrance with steps. Good sized single en-suite bedroom. Friendly staff, good food & entertainment. What about Sunday night entertainment please? Being mobility impaired a bit concerned about access. But apart from entrance steps the rest of the hotel had good access. Very helpful manager very kindly carried my suitcases up the road to bus stop on departure. Hourly buses to Barnstaple but reduced buses to Ilfracombe and Minehead.

Lovely hotel in a lovely resort

My wife have been to this hotel several times over recent years. We have booked a superior room with sea-view each time - the views are worth it! A homely hotel with friendly welcoming staff. Great position overlooking Lynmouth and Countisbury Hill - see my photos on Google Earth. The hotel's car park is small, but the free town car park parking permits allow parking in Lynmouth as well as Lynton - a bonus!

My Favourite

I want to say this is my third stay in this hotel since October 2010 and I love it. I stay usually in room 72, they will remember me! I just love the hotel, the staff, the location and Shearings, I hope you are proud of your staff, I have got to know them all personally and they are a lovely bunch. The views are simply stunning and Lynton and Lynmouth has many beautiful memories of my parents, as does the hotel. I would not want to go to Lynton and stay elsewhere.

Just So Good

We know that Shearings do fantastic good value holidays and we do not not how you do it!. Your hotel staff are so good- and the waiting staff were happy! This means they are not treated badly. The hotel was welcoming and our room was lovely. Very clean and basic but with good views and it was so quiet we got restless as we we could not hear the railway and motorway as we usually do. Food was good. Let your chefs have a bit more leeway please! They know what they are doing! Thank you

Weekend Treat

Just got back from a weekend break at the Valley of Rocks Hotel and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very old and could do with a new coat of paint and the room was a bit tired, but for the time spent in it, not a problem. The food was good and the staff friendly.
