About Ship and Castle Hotel

Set beside the harbour, in an enviable position, the Ship and Castle Hotel is full of the charming atmosphere of nautical St Mawes and is an ideal base for a leisurely holiday. From this peaceful spot, with its winding streets and ancient Tudor castle, a short ferry trip (weather permitting!) is a lovely way to reach Falmouth and its range of interests. Delightful country and cliff-top walks are on hand, or you may prefer to take to the road and escape to a deserted beach, try your luck at sea angling, or cruise up pretty creeks and rivers. Whatever you choose to do, the Ship and Castle is one of the best equipped hotels in St Mawes for you to simply sit back and relax, and is a perfect complement to all that Cornwall has to offer.

Points to be aware of

This is a re-furbished hotel of superior Shearings quality, when booking, if required specify SHOWER. St Mawes is on a peninsular and to get anywhere on a coach takes 30/45 minutes of the same road each time .Pedestrians or cars can use one of two ferries. The food is of good fresh quality with an alternative menu for which you can pay extra, less an allowance, if you cannot find meals to suit. Warmth was a problem due to poor weather in early May, solved by the manager switching on the heat.

Easter Break

Clean and tidy hotel. Staff friendly and polite. Food good, but if you've stayed at any other Coast and Country Hotels you will know what the menu is going to be. Our room was fantastic with dual aspect windows overlooking the Quay, which we paid extra for - well worth it! The driver of our coach Steve made the holiday extra special. His local knowledge was fantastic. Our long journey from London Gateway was very entertaining and we seemed to arrive in no time at all. Well done Steve!

New Year Break

Nice hotel, staff very friendly and helpful. Food very good with plenty of choice. Stayed in a standard room with a sea view. Room was acceptable but the bathroom had no heating, electric towel rail and no shower just a bath. Restaurant, lounge and bar area were all comfortable and nicely presented. Entertainment was good but felt that New Year Eve's entertainment was slightly lacking.

Shame about the hot water system!

A party of ten of us spent five days at this hotel. Whilst the hotel is in a lovely spot, the staff are very helpful (that includes the dining staff, reception, cleaners and the entertainment), they have a problem with the hot water system. Several mornings and again in the evenings there was no water for a cup of tea and no hot water for a shower/bath . This applied to seven of our party and therefore was not an isolated occurrence. My advice - Choose your rooms carefully?

Super Autumn Break

This is the third time my friend and I have taken a break at this hotel in the Autumn. Gets better and better, the improvements made to reception and the downstairs areas have made it so much smarter and brighter and the food and service were first class. We were lucky to be allocated a room with side view of the harbour, we would have liked a balcony/sea view but they are like gold, however we were very comfortable. Can't wait for our next visit maybe a slight change in tour itinerary?

Christmas

Having just returned from a very good Christmas at this hotel. The staff were friendly, nothing too much trouble, the hotels is having a refit in February 2011, it was ok at the moment, will have to go back to see the improvements. I cannot praise the staff enough, the food was really good, so much choice and well cooked, the entertainment in the evening was good, only complaint is that I would have liked duvets on bed instead of blankets, saying that I was plenty warm, also the cleaners were great

Made Welcome

Have had a wonderful time. The staff at this hotel are very friendly and attentive the host J.P is amazing always smiling and makes you feel special would recommend this holiday to anyone wanting good value and great service. We don’t often rebook the same hotel but can’t wait to go back.

Thank You

We had a wonderful family weekend break at the end of May 2011. The Balcony room was wonderful with views across the water. John Pierre made the weekend more special as he went out of his way to make my husband’s special birthday quite memorable. Food excellent as usual, the upgraded dining room was lovely and clean and the cafe downstairs very chic. Definitely will go back again at a later date. A special thanks to all the staff from reception to our room cleaners

Fabulous Service

Exceeded our expectations, having stayed in a number of Shearings Hotels, this was by far the best yet. Excellent service. The professional manner in which every aspect of the restaurant was managed by Jean Pierre made all the difference. In fact all the staff were extremely pleasant and customer-focused at all times. Standard of food was a delightful. We're planning on coming back. A big thank you to all!

Wonderful Time

Have had a wonderful time over the new year but you should look at the shower in room 210 you can be having a shower and the water becomes boiling hot did tell the staff twice with no response. PS -  the price of a can of Guinness is far too high at £3.65 also is warm.
